I am getting ready to buy an AR-15 style carbine.

I am looking at Olympic, Rockriver and Bushmaster.
I am hoping for a barely used one that someone needs to get some cash for, but new is not out of the question.

Any opinions?

I would go with the Bushmaster or the Rockriver. You my want to check out DPMS as well they have some nice Bull barrel set ups. I have an AR with a Bushmaster lower and a DPMS 20" bull barrel upper, get around 1/2" at 100 yds.

Not sure which brand my son has, but it's sweet!! Shop around and you can get ammo pretty dang cheap by the brick or by the case. A buddy of mine has one (some off brand) and gets ammo for around 15 cents a round in bulk. Can't remember where he buys it, but he buys 5000 rounds at a time, which makes for a great afternoon down by the river.....

If you go olympic DON'T get the plinker (built on cast reciever). Best thing to do is buy a stripped lower receiver (about $125) and then buy a kit and put it together.

www.model1sales.com
www.jtdistributing.com

Almost all of the parts come from the same places initially but for instance Colt has "colt" stamped on theirs and Bushmaster has "BM" stamped on theirs; as long as you still with reputable dealers you'll get good stuff. JT uses Colt and FN parts and while Model 1 doesn't specify where their parts come from the were equally good.

You can build a basic AR for about $600. The upper receiver comes totally assembled and headspaced and is ready to go. The lower parts take about 1-2 hours to put in the stripped lower and then the upper just goes on with two pins. Those two websites will build your upper the way you want it and add or subract any features you do or do not want. The lower parts kit is VERY easy to install in the lower. Not really anything you can screw up. You can also get an assembled lower and then buy a kit and then you'll have extra parts for the lower internals. I've put together rifles from both of the above websites and both uppers were as well built as any Colt or Bushmaster I've ever seen (JT uses Shaw barrels and I think Model 1 uses Wilson), and the lower parts were all perfect and went in with no problems. You might want to go over to www.ar15.com and check out the "build it yourself" forum. For a lower I'd get a Bushmaster or a Rock River Arms. If you get an Oly make sure you get a forged and not cast receiver. Stay away from anything made by ASA (American Spirit Arms), Hesse, or Vulcan. All are total crap.

Mags are cheap but stick with USGI aluminum mags (check out mag forum on ar15 site). Ammo has gone up at a rate to rival that of gasoline. With metals going up in price like they are 223 has gone from .12-13 round to .18/round for guatamalan surplus to .30/round for UMC, Winchester White Box, Federal American Eagle etc. Most places are sold out at those prices so it will probably keep going up.

I used to be big in the AR stuff but kid #2 came along and it was either sell the Jeep or the shooting toys and since my wife wasn't real comfortable with my shooting toys in a house with kids I sold mine off. Maybe I'll get back into it at some time but for now my $$$ are tied up in other things.

I've always prefered the Rock River Arms over the Bushmaster; however if you want my opinion dump the black gun and go Kalashnikov. You'll save money on the gun and the ammo, and have a gun that's dead reliable in all conditions. I'd suggest a VEPR from Robinson Arms or a Bulgarian Arsenal, both are world class at a price that barely gets you into a black gun that goes bang most of the time when you pull the trigger.

7.62x39 has over doubled in price over the last few months and right now no one has it in stock. Guns are a little cheaper but mags for AK's are getting more expensive too. AK is definately a good, fun, reliable gun to shoot but most of the AK's on the market now are built from surplus parts that leave something to be desired (the two that you mentioned would NOT). All ammo has gone through the roof, but lately 223 and 308 have been cheap compared to 7.62x39 (if you can find any). Used to be able to get that stuff for $65/1000....
I'm kicking myself for what I sold my AMMO for. I came out ok when I sold my AR and my Mak90, but I practically gave the ammo away and now the ammo costs more than the gun.

I have the Colt AR-15 and would not have any other. Just my opinion, but the thing is great. I bought it before the ban went into effect as an investment, which is blown now due to the AWB expiring. I also have a russian and Chinese SKS and they both shoot very well also. All pre-bans. I buy my Ammo from www.cheaperthandirt.com. Surplus ammo is about .22 cents a round, not as cheap as it used to be. You can also buy tracer rounds, and many other little toys. Find a gunshow in your area and look there. Texas Gunshows are awesome, no wait, and just about anything you want to buy is there. Take Care, KJ

Man you might want to check out....well just out anybody other than CTD for ammo. They're pricey (and that's being nice).

Check out www.sportsmansguide.com and use the appropriate coupon http://www.sportsmansguide.com/section/section.asp?s=2993#top
SG usually has GREAT ammo prices but if they have a good deal you better jump on it as they sell out quick. They carry a LOT of stuff other than ammo too. I got a pair of Doc Martin shoes (discontinued style) for $40 shipped a few months ago.

other ammo sites
www.midwayusa.com
www.aimsurplus.com (good for .223 and .308 surplus)
www.natchezss.com
www.outdoormarksman.com
www.wideners.com

All of these places are considerably cheaper than "cheaper than dirt"

Colt did the ORIGINAL AR15 and I doubt anyone makes a better one, but they cost about 2-3 times what a Bushy or RRA will run and for a shooter one of those will work just as well. Colt caved to the gun control nazis and quit selling to civilians so there aren't any more Colts coming into the market (which is keeping the price up).

Whatcha gonna do with that little plinker?

plink.;)

I just have wanted one since I got out of the military many moons ago
About 6 years ago, I traded for a nice Mini-14 and it is a fun little weapon to shoot. The .223 is very inexpensive, you can buy boxes of 20 for 2.99 just about anywhere. I just like the profile of the gun.

I've got to find buyers for my Taurus 9MM and my Marlin Camp 9 to raise some cash flow before I make my buy:(

Yeah those darn Russians have been selling it all to other people, new shipments have already started arriving, ammunitionstore.com claims to still have it for about $110 per 1000.

Regardless I'm not a huge fan of the .223 or the 5.45X39, just too weak knee'd out of any barrel shorter than a 20".

VEPR also has a RPK chambered in .308... ;-)

What'cha wanting fer the mini-14?

The mini is not for sale, the Camp 9 and the Taurus are
I think I will offer the Camp 9 for aound 330-360, depending on if the buyer wants the red dot and the leather strap.

Is your mini the range rifle? I just heard that Ruger is not making the cheaper model anymore. I really want a mini but just can't afford it currently. If you find the cheaper one, better jump on it. This information is second hand, so I can't say 100 percent, but the guy is pretty up and up.

Wm69, thanks for the website, but they're about the same price as CTD. Well, I will concede, the three .223 ammo's I checked out were .02 cents cheaper. Problem was, they were sold out. Anyway, thanks for another source and I will be checking back soon. How much do they charge for shipping? I didn't get that far, since they were out of stock.
Thanks for the update on colt, I haven't been keeping up, but I thought they were back in production with the AR-15. Between work, college, Jeeps, and Beer, haven't been reading much about weapons since I returned from Japan. Take Care, KJ

Yeah, mine is the "Ranch Rifle" blue steel. They make several levels, with synthetic stocks and stainless parts.
I need to check into that info, thanks for letting us know.

Some things they aren't much cheaper on, and sportsmansguide just raised their prices not too long ago, but for instance you can get winchester white box 9mm for about $125/1000 shipped. Here's a good .223 price list that is updated everyday.

You'll notice that of the ammo listed that CTD DOES carry, they are among the highest of all the vendors listed. They have some cool stuff in their catalogs, but they are anything but "cheaper than dirt".

Colt got scared by all the lawsuits being filed by cities saying they were responsible for crime (you know, like GM is responsible for drunk driving) so Colt altogether wussed out and stopped selling to civies,
