GenRight Off Road Finishes Top 10 at the 2015
King of the Hammers Race in Johnson Valley
The 2015 King of the Hammers race in Johnson Valley was the most grueling yet. In its 9th year, the King of the Hammers pushed every ones’ limits with a 215 mile long course over three laps with the toughest rock trails in the country, and arguably the world. Hailed as the most difficult one-day off road race in the world, this year’s King of the Hammers lived up to its reputation and then some.
GenRight Off Road’s motorsports division has raced King of the Hammers since 2010. With the company’s founder and president Tony Pellegrino at the helm, GenRight has secured two second place podium finishes. In 2015, GenRight arrived in Johnson Valley with a true determination to win. After spending the previous seven months designing and building a brand new purpose built Ultra4 race car, holding team planning meetings, and adhering to special diets and training regimens, GenRight had done everything in their power to bring home a first place finish.
But the thing about the King of the Hammers is that you never can tell what will happen on race day. Even the best laid plans can go awry, and even the most prepared drivers can run into bad luck. After a strong start from the 23rd position, GenRight’s #4485 race car “Nexus” passed 13 cars, putting them in the 10th position heading into the second lap of the race. From there, small problems plagued the racers and the car, making it all but impossible to gain any more positions. The first of these issues was a stuck throttle cable, which while it seems like a good problem to have, caused us to run on the brake, slowing the #4485 car down significantly. After the throttle cable was repaired, the GenRight team ended up continually in traffic (though luckily escaped the 60+ car jam on Jackhammer) that kept them in a consistent 10th position.
GenRight crossed the finish line after 11 hours 54 minutes and 30 seconds. Pellegrino and co-driver Bryan Lyttle were grateful to be safely across the line, even if it wasn’t the first place finish that the GenRight team had been counting on.
Overall, GenRight placed 9th behind some of the most talented off-road racers in the industry. Out of 146 drivers who started the race, only 17 finished by the 10:00 PM cut off, proving, if nothing else, that the 2015 King of the Hammers was a race like no other.
