I was takin some pics of my car last night and noticed my dash lights werent working. the lights that usually turn on with my headlights , oil pressure guage , temp etc..

i know its gotta some fuse problem, but i checked the accessories fuse and it was fine, fuse #10, with a 5 amp fuse. Thats the one that controls the illumination lamps.

the lights when i engage 4wd still work tho... its strange. anyways thanks in advance

I had that problem on my jeep too... and I ended up having
to replace the dimmer switch because the wiring was loose
and wasn't coming on, but I replace that and all has been fine
ever since........... :-D [addsig]

Does everything else work?? My dash lights, turn signals, brake lights and A/C blower quit on my XJ right after i got it...Had no power TO the fuses...(using a test light hooked to ground, check BOTH sides of the fuses...My problem was caused by bad connections at the ignition switch attached to the top of the steering column...hope this helps..[addsig]

If your head light switch is like mine then the part that dims the dash lights a coil rheostat. The coil is embedded in a ceramic disc and as you turn the dimmer, a contact presses against a part of the coil. When you pull the switch look closely at the coil. Do you see a break in the coil? If so the dimmer circuit will not work. Also, if it turns out to be a blown fuse, you should ALWAYS find the what made the fuse blow, don't just pop a new one in.

Also check the park light fuse. It is located at the bottom right of the block and is a 20 amp fuse.

I am having a similar problem but I can't seem to be able to isolate the problem.
All lights work perfectly except the light the illuminates the fog/defroster/wiper switches and my heater controls no longer illuminate. Fuses good, bulbs good, switch is good, did my best to chase the wires, not grounding out frayed or burned, but I do not have 12 volts to just those two parts.

Any takers?

Jps4jeep, There should be a connection point where all the instrument panel light wires meet before attaching to the headlamp switch. It is probably an inline connection, have you checked for a connection? its possible one or two of the wires are no longer connected.

I was thinking there might be a fusable link some where under there, but as far as I know, fuel injected vehicles do not use fusable links at all.

As for that connection point, I am going to check that out later today when I get home. I accually thought about that as well. Just not looking fowardto pulling the dash off again.

Thanks Nick

Jps4jeeps,

I also used to think they didn't have fuseable links, however that is incorrect. I don't know how many the wranglers have, but I've got 7 fuseable links right at the starter relay (they connect to the relay using round crimp connectors.) This is the only place they are used, and are barely noticable. They power the fuseblock, almost all the under hood relays, and the ignition switch.

Check the fuses under the hood. there is a box with many different fuses next to the battery. If the fuses went out, make sure you find out what caused them to go out. -Al[addsig]

Nick, I looked nothing under the dash is disconnected, all looks good. I am going to do a continuity test later today. Ran out of time yesturday, the Wifes birthday is saturday and I had to put together her new BBQ grill! (no joke thats what I bought her, she is a jeep gurl through and through)

As for fusable links, I don't have any off my starter relay. Maybe cause yours is a 88 and mine is a 94 I really don't know, But I hope those never go on you. I blew out three fusable links on my blazer years back, took forever to re-wire :-O

PSI, fuses under there are all good, I am beginning to think the wire burned out some where in line behind some tape. If I can't find out what it is, I am not going to cry about it! They haven't worked for over a year

Thanks all

Thanks, but don't worry about me. Let's just say I'm doing a little re-wiring project under the hood ;-) :-D.

SO AFTER THIS WHOLE POST, i finally got it fixed.

what happened was my cigarette lighter shorted out my dash lights, and the bulb in my rear brake light went at the same time....

so i replaced the fuses, replaced the cig lighter, and can drive at night again... 40$ later.....[addsig]
