Fuel Gauge issue

The fuel gauge on my 1987 Jeep XJ was not working when I purchased my XJ. I did an electrical test with my multimeter according to a video on YT (Link below) the test was run from the connection to the fuel pump sending unit as in the video through the jeep and I needed to see 6.50 on the meter, I did see 6.50 telling me that wiring and gauge are good.

The fuel gauge would not move, it stayed, E, so I got a new pump and sending unit when I had the garage install it, this is what I have now and do not understand what is going on?

wired up backwards ??
there is only one fitting and it is only fits one way but I can check it next time I am at the garage and see if the mechanic working on it shoved it in backwards.
Yeah, something grounded since the gauge is reading pegged to full
There is only one fitting and it is only fits one way but I can check it next time I am at the garage and see if the mechanic working on it shoved it in backwards but if that were true would the pump work at all? I made a second post on this dealing more with the fact that the pump is working but seems to running all the time. When I turned the Jeep on I could hear it running and it never stopped the minute or so that I had the ignition in the on position and the Jeep fires up and runs with no issues.

Thanks

Thanks

So its a single connwction sensor? If so. The pull the sensor and check it. It acts like its bad since it pegging to foll deflection

I am going there in the morning and plan to make sure the plug you see in the attached video is plugged in right and while I have the connection undone I am going to turn key to the on position and see where the gauge it. The mechanic insists that the gauge face the needle is broken and I need to get a new gauge.

I am looking online for one for a 1987 Jeep XJ but so far I cannot find one does anyone know where to find a replacement if I need it I have been watching videos on how the test the gauge once I remove it from the cluster I have not found a video so far if anyone knows one.

To test the gauge and wire, unhook the wire from the sensor and touch it to the block when the ignition is in the run position. The needle on the gauge should swing from cold to full deflection hot and return to cold when you take it off the block.

If it swings and returns, your wire, cluster, and gauge are all good and its the sensor. But you have to make sure and get a solid ground when you touch the wire to the block, not an oily or very dirty connection

Dang, i just saw the little picture in the bottom of your first post. I think it is the gauge but do the test i told you.

It actually looks like the needle rest broke on the gauge face and let the needle swig down to much. There should be a small black pin that stick our perpendicularly to the face where the needle sits when the the key is off. It would prevent that needle from dropping like in your pic

I am going to remove the gauge from the cluster and take a look at it I know the electronics are good it is just the face or needle according to the mechanic.

Does anyone make replacement that fits in the cluster my search keeps coming up with one for a 87 Wrangler it is an Omix-ada (link below) The gauge face looks right, I am wondering if this works for the XJ if they used to same one in the Wrangler?

I think I will call them money

I have an update, I went to the shop and brought the Jeep home this morning. The image on the original post is what the gauge looks like with the new pump and sending unit. The mechanic said the gauge is bad but I had run the test in the video also in the original post and knew it was good so when I arrived I went under the Jeep and unplugged the pump and sending unit and then turned to key to "ON" and the gauge moved to this position.

When I showed the mechanic this he said it is the sending unit as I was saying. Right now unless someone has some other idea I believe I got a defective assembly from Amazon?
