exhaust question

ok i have a 87 samurai that i am in the process of finding that perfect sounding muffler. well i ran it for a week or so with no muffler. just straight piped loved the sound. not to loud but nice and aggressive sounding. my neighbor told me running no muffler will cause the motor to suck and or burn vavles. my question is this true? will it suck a vavle if i take my current muffler off? sorry this is exlactly a jeep question but i know someone on here will have the right answer. i have found that friends arnt alway the best place for information. thanks for any and all input.

Ok first without back pressure on the exhaust side you will lose some bottom end (arguments pro and con over this). Over time you will start to damage the exhaust valve due to no back pressure helping the valve close more slowly, so in time it will wear the exhaust valve, valve seat, valve guild and upper retaining clip enough to cause you problems. Thus some time down the road the upper retaining clip might snap due to a faster closing on the exhaust port leading to sucking a valve or wear the valve seat or the valve itself just enough to leave a small opening allowing hot combusted gas to pass through during the ignition/combustion phase of the stroke thus burning the valve as the hot gasses pass through the exhaust port and push the piston down in the power stroke phase. If valve seat start deteriorating you will wear the valve guild and valve stem enough to allow oil to pass through burning more oil as it leaks into the exhaust port fouling the valve seat faster.

ok thanks for the answer. it just sounds so good with out a muffler on it. its just that perfect sound.

it had a cherry bomb on it when i got it. i lived with it but i hated the sound. at the monent it has a borla muffler that i got with a cat back i bought for my jeep. sounds ok at idle but like crap the rest of the time. cherry bombs are to pingy for me
hey steven. what are so some pros on no muffler? more top end power? if so the little 1.6 liters of fury could use some help there
