Differential Questions

contemplating an engine swap. I have a 97 TJ with 4 cyl. would like to go to 6 cyl. I have heard that I can use existing tranfer case, transmission and bell housing and I have heard that I would need to replace everything. What is the scoop?

RE: Where did the old avatars go?

bellhousings are different... best off replacing everything... it should be the same transfercase.. but if you can get everything together.. that's probably the best way to go

Transmission and bellhousing won't work, the transfer case will if you swap out the input shaft to match the 4.0L transmission.

But I have to ask WHY? Why go through the trouble, time, and expense, just to have another run of the mill 4.0L jeep with a hacked up drivetrain install? It'll be like all the other 4.0L jeeps out there, but worse.

If you're going to go through all the trouble, swap in something that will make the swap worthwhile, like a 4.3L Vortec or v8.

RE: DANA 30 TEAR DOWN

If I have to change all that then I won't bother. My thought was to look around the junkyards and find a 4.0 then do a rebuild and hop-up on it then when it was ready to go, do the install. If I have to change that much then I agree that it wouldn't be worth the hassle. Thanks for the info.

RE: Re: RE: Differential Questions

Hop up the 4banger, it's a lot of fun in a light easily maintained package.
