Engine swap

Okay here is a newbie question,
I have a 1988 cherokee with a 4.0 and automatic transmission that I would like to put in my 1989 Wranger. Right now the Wrangler has a 2.6 with an AX-15 transmission. The Cherokee is complete and so is the Wrangler. Is this possible without having to pledge my first born child to the Jeep Gods?

Thanks, Uphill

Your Wrangler has the 2.5L with the AX5.

You will have to cut the motor mount perches from the YJ's frame and weld in 4.0L motor mount perches, along with installing the 4.0L transmission and transfer case. You'll also need the 4.0L wiring harness and computer.

It's usually easier and cheaper to swap in a common GM 4.3L or 5.7L engine.

The '88 4.0L is not a HO and would not be worth the time and trouble of putting in the YJ, IMO.

Thanks Bounty_Hunter,
As far as what is cheaper, I already have the 88 Cherokee so the cost of the motor and transmission is nothing. But if it would be way too much work then I would rather not do it at all. I really would like to have a 4.0 in the YJ, but I don't want this to be one problem after another. Thanks for the feedback.

Using such an old non-HO 4.0L would be problematic, too problematic to make it worth while. Can you sell the XJ and get a decent drivetrain?

it would be no less work than swapping something much more powerful, and something with some more life... a V8, or a good 4.3 or something would be much better... either way, nothing will match up... the 4.0 uses a different computer, mounts, drivetrain, gauges, everything... the only thing that may be the same are a few sensors
