EGR questions

Ok people...I am about to replace the carter with a motorcraft carb. as long as i'm futzing around in there i'm going to clean up a few things. Do I need to keep the EGR valve ? what problem would be caused by removing it and blocking off the passages or what ever...? I have no fear of emmissons checking..we are "rural" Wisconsin here..:purple:
my Jeep is a 87 yj 4.l with a nutter an a gazilion miles on her..but she's still strong and going.( I'll bargain for my Son's 4.0 ho when the time comes)
I shouild mention when I bought the yj most of all the wiring was butched and vacuume hoses pulled or plugged. tubes and hoses hanging everywhere. I'm not sure how well the EGR even functions. It idles fine after a long warm up but stumbles a little on decell and short trips. some possible side effects of bad egr i'm told.
so do i need it or not ????
Thanks for any help you can give.

I have an 87 4.2 and the EGR was disabled or broken when I got the Jeep. Just to test it, I removed it and put a plate over where it went. Everything ran fine. In fact, mine ran better because the previous owner didn't believe in gaskets. It was one major vacuum leak.
Basically, all the EGR does is put some of the exhaust gas back into the intake and burns off more of the fumes. It only comes open when the motor is warmed up.

Check out this site for a little more info on what controls what for when you swap carbs.

yeah , I got the 2150 on today ! The one I paid $50.00 from mufflerman was missing all the guts so i got one from the boneyard for $15.00 and slapped it on and ka-boom ! it runs fabulous ! I even hooked up the egr ! but trashed all the old vac lines and bull ship switches. I guess i should have just went to the boneyard instead of wasting $63.00 with shipping and $2.00 for beer that i don't think he deserved ! oh well ...live and learn right !
