Dual batteries?

Do I need to install dual batteries? 2000 TJ Wrangler? 8000 lb winch, Rear ARB Locker. I'm sure it's a good thing, but 600.00

Battery Bracket - jeep speed shop - custom 50.00
2 Optima Red Top Batteries 360.00
Painless Wiring Co. - wiring, solenoid, switch 180.00

Are you running duals, and what kind of setup? Thanks!

It is a question of preference, if you do a lot of winching, then yes. Your winch can drain a battery faster than your factory alternator can charge it. In a wet cell type of battery this can bring on premature death, since they don't like being drained past 75%, then recharged in a repeat fashion, if your doing multiple winchings in one day.
Spiral gel cell types (optima and such), can take this a little better, the yellow top being the best choice since it designed to take just this type of abuse.
Most people use there winch once or twice a season at most. Then needing a dual battery set-up, no you can get away with careful use keeping your motor running while winching. But if you start going on extreme type of trails where you might face multiple winchings per day...it would be a added safety feature being able to start from one battery and use your second as a winching one where in case you kill it from over winching you can still drive yourself off the trail.

Single BlueTop Optima has worked fine for me for years, and I do a fair amount of winching. I think duals can often be overkill.
