door issues

my front driver side door has issues, all the other doors close smoothly, but this one kinda catches in the middle and swings back at me unless i put pressure on it just right and then it makes a godawful noise and closes. i ahve had enough of this and need to replace the door pin, hinge, whatever. if anyone knows in particular what is wrong with it so i can locate the appropriate part the help would be greatly appreciated. if feels like im about to rip the door off the car every time i close it. thanks ~ max

It´s probably not the hindges, it´s the gizmo that holds the door open. It´s the flat piece of steel with a rounded notch in it, that disapears inside the door (halfway between the two hindges). It has a spring loaded wheel inside the door that rusts, sticks and jams. Eventually it will fatigue the metal, where it enters the door, and a pretty good chunk of your door, will pull out by the roots. Knock the pin out of the body side and loosen the two 3/8" nuts on the door, and either remove it or replace it. As a temporary fix, I´ve loosened the two nuts and let the, the whole works slide in and out for awhile, but you run the chance of chafffing some wiring inside the door. [addsig]

ok im gonna do that temporary fix right now, as far as wiring, i dont have power locks or windows so im pretty much wireless. and that flat piece is what holds the door open right? like what it catches on so the wind or something doesnt blow it shut? my last car had a gimp one of these too, i need to learn to fix it. thanks for the help ~ max[addsig]

Make sure the door isn't hitting the fender...if you even lean on the fender hard right where it meets the door you can bend the flimsy standoffs. if it gets pushed in just a little the door won't clear... both of mine were like that when i bought my project xj.

I strenghtened the tabs when i had the fenders off doing the trimming i needed to clear my tires...

I replaced the pins, and part that mounts on body a couple weeks ago. New pins and brackets for both front doors cost only 7.00 total from local jeep parts counter, took about 8 mins to change. lubed them up good with some white lith. grease and as good as new. Luckily mine were not worn on flat bar that goes inside door only at pin area of body mount bracket and pins were worn a little. Fix it right as soon as you can or your gonna cause more work and a bigger bill later.

kk i took those bolts out and now its nice and smooth. i plan on calling some parts places today to see how much a replacement is gonna be, whats the technical name for that piece? that way i dont have to say that metal bar thingy that slides inside the door.[addsig]

there called door catches, and you won't find anywhere but at a jeep dealer. Should cost ya around 30 - 40 each.

hmm. Same sort of thing happened to my grandma's olds cutlass. One of the hinges was broken. We just got it welded. They did it right on the body, didnt take it off or anything. Took like 10 minutes.[addsig]

Something just popped into my mind, usually the drivers side goes bad first, then the passengers side. I´ve never seen the rears fail (don´t get used as much). Don´t know for certain if the rears are the same as the fronts, but if they are, a trip to the junk yard may be in order. Pull two rears, replace the faulty front door catch and keep one as a spare for the next time (passengers side).[addsig]

I don't think they are the same, you caould call a jeep parts counter and ask price on all four and then ask if the rears are same as front one. worth a shot if you can find em in a boneyard.[addsig]

im in des moines, IA. theres maybe one junkyard in this city and they've got no jeeps. its a sad sad place. im gonna have to suck it up and buy them from the damn dealer.[addsig]
