Deer Hunter Choice of weapon

I am looking at purchasing a different rifle to hunt with this year and was just curious what many of you use. I have been using a remington 270 pump and love it, but thought I may go bolt action this year. Any suggestions? Thanks

Depends where you hunt (what terrain), but I always used my Winchester 30-30 in the brush filled and hilly Western MD.

I have always been a fan of the 7mm caliber. The Remington 700 series is a nice bolt action and a tough one to beat ;)

700 bolt .270

It has several size/weight bullets for different game.

Not overkill for white tail and you can still take an Elk also
I Just don't use the ballistic tip on whitetail unless you place your shot as to not waste meat.

And, also I have been threatening to use my .223 Mini 14 to hunt white tail
That thing shoots 1 inch groups at 100 yards and the .223 can be a fine whitetail round.

Remington's 700 BDL and lower priced ADL are a one of the finest rifles I have ever owned.
There tough and rugged exterior matches there craftsmanship and components.
My BDL has seen several tough hunts including a a two week trip to Alaska to hunt trophy Moose across summer tundra conditions to a half mountain climbing excursion to hunt Big horn sheep.
I have a 700 BDL in .300 win mag with a 12x24x56mm Leupold on it.
But I go for bigger game like moose and bear. For an all around US caliper (lower 48 ) a few suggestion would be .243 .300 wsm, 7mm or even a .308.
But for shear distance and knock down force to drop any thing in the contenetial US the .300 win mag is it....including a mack truck!

Well there you go... The Rem. 700 seems to be the popular suggestion. It is tried and true in reliability, accuracy, and ruggedness, so it only makes sense it is the first thought when referencing a hunting rifle. So... what caliber? .270, 7mm, and 300Win Mag have all been suggested. All are excellent choices, but the more I think about it I might have to agree with UJ. The 300 Win Mag is an excellent round. Any and even many others would do though, there is no shortage opf good deer dropper calibers.

Which one is you?:

DO not forget to have the trigger pull checked before you take it out to sight in.

I bought one a few years back that ended up having three times the normal pull
Dunno if it was a factory screw up, but I couldn't group that thing for nothing until I adjusted the pull back down to what I like, which is about 1.5 - 2 lbs

I have been looking the the 700s and would probably go with something other than 270 since I already have one. 90, I have thought about using my mini also, but would definitely have to change ammo before hand. All I have laying around is FMJ. Thanks for all the advice and I guess I will start looking around for the best price.

I've never tried to shoot some premium hunting loads through my Mini 14, I would like to see if the group gets better.

I have a Remington 700 308 with a bushnell scope and i'm more than happy with it, the bullet hits where the cross hairs are i've killed two deer with it so far.

Last year I bought a Savage Arms 116FSS model in 7mm Rem. Mag. Knowing the short and long distance capabilities of the rifle, I chose it with the possibility of doing some long-range hunting in the future. That rifle has the recoil of a shotgun, but it's quite accurate. Last year was my first hunting season and was an empty-handed one at that. Maybe this year will be better. Whatever your decision, KrazyJeeper, enjoy it.

I shoot a Browning Stalker stainless/synthetic with the BOSS system. It is chambered in 7mm Rem Magnum. Optics are Leupold 4.5-14 x 50. I shoot Winchester CXP ballistic tip ammo. It shoots better ballstics than advertised. Last season I shot a 1/2" group at 320 yds. The bullet only dropped 3".
I have had the gun two seasons and so far have killed 3 deer and 3 coyotes with it. I haven't had to track an animal yet, which is awesome.
The Remingtons are good guns. Spend the big money on your optics. Also consider the .30-06. Lots of different grains to choose from and very versatile.

Well all I do is bowhunt these days...But as far as a rifle goes for deer hunting...In my mind it's hard to beat the tried & true 30-06. I've killed a ton of deer with them over the years and dropped pretty much all of them dead in their tracks with 150gr ammo. I love the 30-06, plenty of KE, can be shot at long range and packs enough juice to lay most anything in North America on the ground in fast order.

That 700 is a great rifle. But I honestly can't contribute much here though. I prefer the pointy stick method. I haven't rifle hunted deer for many yeas now. Ever since we dropped one and another hunter came up on it and wanted to duel over it. (honestly). Wanted to fire weapons over a deer. Ever since then we've bow hunted, so I go with the pointy stick vote...
