Dana 44 ring and pinion

I have replaced my 67cj dana 44 offset rearend with a 73 dana 44 center diff. The 67 dana has 4.89 gears and the 73 dana has 3.73 if i decided to could i use the ring and pinion out of the 67 and install them into the 73? the reason for the swap is due to a transmission an tc swap.Was this a upgrade or downgrade? Thankyou!!

You should be able to use the same ring and pinion with carrier in the newer axle as long as the spline count is the same on the shafts. I would contact a vendor like Randy's Ring and Pinion to be sure.

yes assuming that the carriers are both 30 spline or 19 spline. you will need to swap the carrier as the 4.89 gears will not fit a 3.73 carrier. I know some of the offset D44 were 19 spline axles and most if not all jeep center diffs are 30 spline. make sure they are both the same spline count on the shafts. the swap is not as easy as just swapping parts, you will need to get a master install kit, set the pinion depth, then set up the carrier gears. I like to split the side shims right down the middle, check backlash and pattern, then swap shims side to side to get the right pattern.
