D44 Axle seal Replacement

Hey folks, It's been a while!!

So, I don't have an XJ, but I do have an XJ D44 rear axle under my YJ... which is leaking from the drivers side outer seal. Yesterday I took off the tire and drum just to check, and there is all sorts of crud in there. So my question since I have never done this before...

What do I have to do to replace this seal? I know I have to pull the axle shaft, but I'm not sure how it is held in there... c-clip? pin in the diff? retaining ring? I should say that the axle is out of a 1988 XJ with the towing package... it has 4.56 gears with a limited slip.

I've looked around online, can't really find anything on this specific axle... and since there are a bunch of different D44s out there, I would like to be prepared for this one.

Any input would be great. Thanks!

The axle should be held on with 4 bolts at the backing plate. Remove those and the axle will slide out with the bearing and seal attached. If I'm not mistaken you should replace the bearing and the seal, probably have to cut the old ones off and have the new bearing pressed on.
