Specs: 91 YJ 4.0 5sp 35K; Problem: If I push the clutch pedal and shift fairly quickly I have no problems, but if I push the clutch pedal in and give it some time I have to "double clutch" to get in gear or out of gear. Doesn't matter what gear I'm in or if I'm in neutral, if you hold the clutch very long I have to "double clutch". Clutch fluid level is fine. Any ideas?[addsig]

wow with so few miles i would say that your clutch is just worn out. it MIGHT be your syncros... is this the original clutch?[addsig]

Yes is is the original clutch and 35K is the orig mileage. It will engage fine, but the longer the clutch pedal is pressed it will start to slip until it no longer slips and is totally engaged. For instance if I'm in neutral and keep the clutch pressed for awhile, I cannot shift unless I release the clutch pedal and press it again, and this is the same for every position (1st,2nd,3rd, etc.). The gears never grind, it either shifts or it doesn't. After the clutch has been pressed for awhile it "softens" considerably.

Sounds like you have to have the rpm's just right to shift, waiting too long allows the rpms to drop. Probably the synchros, but don't remove the transmission just yet. Remove your current transmission gear oil (most likely a GL5 rated oil that is corrosive to the brass synchronizers and too slick for the synchronizers to work correctly) and replace it with a quality synthetic like Redline MT90 that is easy on the synchros. Shifting WILL improve. Do it now before it's too late.

Some Jeepers have been using GM Synchromesh gear oil in the Aisin/Warner trannies withr reports of success. It's available at most auto parts stores. Redline is generally available online at Summit Racing or Redline Oil :-D [addsig]

Bounty,

You really noticed that much of a difference with the Red Line? I was pondering using it but wasn't moved adequately. If it'll work as well as you say, I'm game. With the cost of a transmission, any small (comparatively) expense is well worth it.

I put it in when I put in this high-mileage used transmission, and it shifts great. I never had anything else in this transmission to compare it to. I can compare it to using GL5 gear oil in my old POS transmission, and it's a great improvement.

To me, it's still cheap insurance. Read more about Redline MT90 and MTL HERE :-D [addsig]
