Hi
I have a 1980 CJ7, 304, 727, Dana 300, Narrow AMC 20, Dana 30.
My engine and transmission are finally done. I just found a 1989 Grand Wagoneer with rebuilt 360, 727, select trac, dana 44s front and rear for $500.00. My question is, will the transmission work or is there speed sensors and computer stuff ect... Is there anything else I should be aware of in swapping the engine, transmission, and eventually diffs. The diffs I know I will have to outboard springs and do drive shafts, steering, and flip the t-case or go to a different one. Any help would be appriciated. Also, how come my picture doen't show up on my posts? Thanks

the only thing from that waggy I would swap into your jeep is the TF727. that 360 is a guttless, worth hunk of junk plagued with issues from day one. The old 360 with higher nickle content would be better choices. If it were me, I'd just re-build the 304 you currently have. the axles will not fit with your current t-case, I would rather stay with the D300. the rear axle could be made to fit, you would have to either get aftermarket shafts with a 5 on 5.5 bolt pattern or re-drill the stockers and then cobble together some brakes, but the D44 and M20 are pretty close strength wise assuming you have a good set of aftermarket 1 piece rear shafts.

regarding the transmission, it is not a hard swap, I do not believe it is computer controled.

'89 Grand Wagoneer will be Dana 44. A good running 360 beats a tired 304. The emissions stuff is what sucks the power from the motors.

Johnny-

Wouldn’t the 1989 full sized grand have the AMC high nickel block? If so why not use it? Direct bolt in and all stuff. If you’re looking for more power it can be don easily with the AMC 360 plus it is cheaper to rebuild a 360 over a 304. (More parts are made for the 360 than the 304 so they tend to be cheaper)

Pistons are the biggest difference pricewise to the 304 vs the 360. A proper 304 intake for power helps too. (I like the SP2P on my '77 AMX motor. 360 intakes have larger plenums and fuel drops out of vapor to puddle and flood on take off when put on a 304)
