Cj5 Speed

Hey , I was reading the other post saying tj's top out at about 70 and i've really never been in a jeep driving before. . . ermm . . shame on me but i guess i didnt even have to drive one to know the feeling. haha. Well i was just wondering what the top speed on my cj5 1963 with the stock f-head was gonna max out at. Everythings pretty much gonna be stock under the hood, besides the air intake and imma weld up a custom exhaust but thats it. We have a 42 power wagon that drives like a tank, maxes out at about 35 so im hoping its not gonna be the same. Any imput? ~justin~

Depends on tire size and condition of engine, and gearing. I would expect you could cruise around sixty...

I didn't read the previous post but my old 4 cyl TJ always went cruising at 80-85 on the thruway....going downhill....with a tailwind.

TJ's will go as fast as they can go, but... The rubicon has a speed limited in it that is set at 85mph.

Prior to all the mods on my 94YJ, I was able to hit a little over 100 mph

As Laneiac stated, that will decide your top speed. a set of 3.55's, chevy 350, and 31's will mean a pretty decent top speed. but if those 31's are replaced with a set of 35's. ya maybe 65 mph.

My 82 CJ-7 with a 258 and 33's with stock gearing will do 70 + on the interstate its been as fast as 80 with no problems so i dont see how a TJ could top out at 70

This week i went to ruidoso , nm to go camping with some buds, and it was a 2 hour drive but we made it much less, i went over 100 or at least the little speedometer thing read over 100 for a little. i was going like 80 the whole way there...

I have a 76 cj7 stock AMC 304 with a T-150 3 speed transmission, an AMC 20 rearend (4.1 gear ratio) and 33" tires. The top speed is about 70 mph

My TJ does over 70 pretty easy. 33" tires and 3.73 gearing. I can get it going about 80-85 down hill

My 93 2.5l on 36s would do over 100. It would do it when it still had the factory gears in it too. All my Jeeps have always been able to do 100. It's on the checklist of things I expect one to be able to do.

I was riding shotgun in my buddy's 79 F150 on 44"Boggers when he got it up to around 90 one night. It was actually a pretty boring ride, the long wheelbase and all the unsprung weight kind of killed the feeling.

Oh yeah jeeprostyle---If you've got the 4.27 axle gears then it won't be so bad. You'll be able to keep up with traffic in town on 31s......and that's not a light task with a flathead 4 cylinder and old-tech, friction heavy drivetrain components.

If it's got lower gears,then just lift it and slap on some 33s.

I think you are the guy that needed a waterneck for the F-134? Mine is junk, I didn't even bother taking it off. Did you get the one off Ebay?

Im not sure what my gearing is . . that to in depth for me . . im still an ameature mechanic man. I accually bought the thermostat housing about 4 hours ago at checkers. They didnt think they had it so i flipped through the book and found one for a later model but it was the same old thing. 10 bucks for it and the gasket, it comes in tomarrow, i hope its the right one. I can get the model number for it tomarrow if it fits if your interested in picking one up, 10 bucks is cheaper than they go on jcwhitley and stuff so it was a good deal. ~ Justin~

My TJ does about 3-4 mph and thrills the bejesus out of me. I get bored on the highway at any speed.

I can do 85+ with 4.56 gears and 33's in my 4.0 xj. I haven't adjusted my speedometer so this is a gross estimate.

Were talking about the Fhead in a CJ5 still right??? I will stick to my opinion of around 60, maybe 65

Yah, were talkin about a 63 4 cylinder f-head thats gonna be mostly stock. Air intake and exhaust are gonna be the only things different for now. I would say its not gonna go much faster than 65 too but i just wanted to make sure it wasnt gonna be like our 4 cylinder power wagon that tops off at 35-40.

I have a 82 CJ 5, with a 6 in it,, I have 31" tires and 4.88 gears. My cluster says I am going 75, but my onboard gps says 52. So alot will depend on "your formula".

DO you have a handheld GPS??? It will tell you exactly how fast you are going.
