It really isn't that hard to do. I changed all my stock speakers out of my TJ for nice 2 way eclipse speakers and it only took a bit of time and the sound is kick butt :-D [addsig]

Help me first, Dash Speaker, Sound Bar, IS this in your Buick? LOL :-D
Just joking,,,,, about the Buick,

If it's a Jeep TJ, personal experience indicates that it is actually much more
simple to do to my Jeep, then my Ford. A Haynes manual <$20 or better
still a "FACTORY SERVICE" Manual (Dealer $70) is a great referance to have
laying in the seat when you're working with your Rig's Wiring. Good Luck,
there are write ups in the archive.

The speakers are in my dash. It's a '93 YJ. It looks like apolt has to come off the dash to get them out. Am I missing something maybe?

This is actually easier than it seems. If you just invert yourself and reach up behind the dash where the speakers are you can feel around and should find that you have complete access to the speakers. unscrew just a couple of small bolts hold in place (7/16" or 3/8" if I remember correctly) Hope this helps- Chris[addsig]

I have an 89 YJ with half hard doors. I actually put a set of 3 way Polk Audio 6x9 speakers in the doors. I built a custom box in the "trunk" with 2 - 10" MTX subs and a 4 channel amp. This set up rocks! It sounds amazing. Loud as can be, even at 70mph on the highway with the top down! [addsig]

osito 129 is correct; On the YJ’s they are accessible from under the dash. If you can find someone with small hands to help you that is an advantage. The passenger side is the easiest. Reach up under the dash and you will feel the speaker. A tip is to push the speaker magnet (That’s the big round part at the back of the speaker, in this case its facing the front of the Jeep) towards the dash with the palm of your hand while initially turning the nut loose with your fingers. This usually works, but not always. If I can remember that long ago, I think I used a 10mm deep socket by itself for those stubborn nuts.
The driver side takes a little more effort. Those small hands are more of a plus here. Unbolting the speaker is actually the easy part, getting it out from under the dash takes thought with some Jeeps being easier than others. (I’ve never figured that one out, but it happens) Unbolting the parking brake helps; (Although I have seen them removed without even doing this) one bolt right by the pull handle and the other was in the engine compartment. After this is loose just leave it there. You will only have to move it a little for that extra clearance to get the speaker out. If that doesn't work, you can unbolt the window hold down plate (Above the speaker) and the three dash bolts (To the left of the speaker) then carefully pry the dash outwards while removing the speaker. You will only need to pry it enough to remove the speaker, but be careful as to not bend the dash panel. I have found the easiest direction to remove the driver’s speaker is down towards the brake and gas pedal. If you get frustrated, step back take a breath and try again. My 10 year old does these (Small hands) for me. L.O.L

Note: If you were planning to replace the stock speakers with upgrades in the stock location, I would think it's best to have them when you do the removal. That way the unbolting, prying, cussing, screaming, bleeding and crying have to be done just once.

I hate when that happens.8-) [addsig]

The thought of installing speakers in the doors came to mind and it's a good one, but removing the doors would be a hassle due to the wiring, although you could use quick disconnects and then again I would be without speakers when I did. So I have opted to remove the dash speakers completely because the roll cage is using that as a mounting source and go with four 5x7 waterproof box speakers (I purchased a quality model for better sound) Two on the top of the rear fenders and two down by the front seats on the floor (these fit by the seat lifting handle just barely) The sound wont impress a teenager but it has plenty of bass and plays quite loud.
They remove easily for wash downs and for the last four years haven't decided to run away.
(No one wants them I guess) [addsig]

raptor_pilot/mike....I havent had a YJ to change speakers out of but I did them in my TJ and they were very simple. If you are looking for 6x9s I have a brand new/never used set of 3way Sony Xplodes. Let me know if you are interested[addsig]

I put a pair of Polk Audio speakers in my TJ as front speakers. They worked out great esspecially after I upgraded the head unit. Are you planning doing that too?[addsig]

i'm definitely putting a new head unit in. The one currently in there doesn't even work. I've got an Alpine head unit. Very nice piece of equipment. Detachable head and other neat little features. It was my father's so it's still in great condition. No it's not that old. Remember I'm only in high school!! :-D [addsig]

no fair, i want to get a new head unit, but i live in the city in a ruff-n-tuff neighborhood. And, i usually leave my doors off too, so... dont really leave much in my car at all. head unit would be gone in 15 mins i bet hehehe[addsig]

If you are looking for a more secure place to mount a head unit you might look into one of the lockable stly center consols. I have heard that they are pretty good, I havent got one myself, I guess I am just askin for mine to be taken. [addsig]

I've got an Alpine headunit with removable faceplate. All you have to do is remove it everytime you leave your Jeep. That is the best way to do it. It's no big deal for me now.-Al[addsig]
