Holy Crap!! That's quite the adventure, glad to see everything is okay and up and running agian. You should send that story to Teraflex!!

RE: IQ Test

Cool, thanks for the share. I was stationed out there when I was in the army and am very familiar with that area. We drive Army convoys along the same pass many a time, with many white-knuckle descents.

We used to climb and camp on top of Mt. Si often, great view of Seattle.

RE: Score one for the Jeep dealer

Wow thats quite a story.

Robert,

I've visited your website before, read much of your Jeep pages one night. Quite a work and quite the history of Jeepin' you have! Glad to have you here on Jeepz and thanks for sharing your story.

RE: NW event

hehe, interesting... revolvers save c-clipped axles...so they do have a use! no im just kidding, thats a great story

not bashing on those who run revolvers, i just think there are better ways to set up a suspension, to each their own

A CJ doesn't have c-clipped axles it has a bearing and pressed on retainer collar with a bolt on falnge to hold it all in there. If the retainer collar comes off you are screwed. It is possible that the collar got hot enough to become loose (metal expands when hot) then the next curve he went aroudn pulled the shaft on out.
I had that happen to me once although on the trail and by different carnage. I broke a Mosier axle shaft on my old AMC 20 right where the bearing presses on. The tire, wheel, brake drum and broken peice of the axle passed me on the trail as I slid to a stop. To answer your questions....yes, a Jeep can still trail ride on 3 wheels if you have a locker and enough liquid courage. It's kinda rough on the drum brake parts though.

RE: Who

Ya, I thought that was an AMC20 1piece axleshaft in that story, came out just like a busted D35 shaft. Had to have been some ride.

RE: Don

Thank all you so far your comments. Yes, the axle were Superior solids, no two piece OEM, but they had put the Napa cheeesy bearings on and that was what caused th cascade failure.

About the Revolvers, I've only had them for the last 6 weeks but only been testing nearly every couple days or so and am failing to get them to do what is claimed in dissent against them. If they finally screw up, I'll go back to the confers. So far no probelms, but the long shocks and other suspension mods have been very worthwhile.

I wish there were more palces where folks have posted failure pics of the Revolver Shackles and why thery are clamied to be so terrible. I am totally open to new input as this all is such a learning curve, no matter how long one has been Jeepin' or 4 wheelin'.

Thanks everyone.

RE: Re: Recovery strap recommendations

Wow, that had to be quite the experience!!! Glad to hear that you nad the Jeep and everyone else on the road was safe!

I've had a wheel fall off on the highway that the tire shop had not tightened down properly, but I slowed down to about 30mph before it happened. It was up in the mountains in the winter and there was tons of ice on the road....so I got real lucky on that one. I got a free wheel from the shop though!!!!!

Whoa!, at least in my case the pavement was just wet and dry with snow and rain falling. It was a smooth operation and quite a rush too, which I seem to enjoy in a perverse sort of way. Oh well, it worked out good in the end.

In your situation, things like that can slip by since we tend to have confidence in a shop and such. Glad that you came out of your ordeal sound and safe too.

Back to a AMC 20 from a Dana 60..........

ya, luckily it wasn't all that icy in the spot it fell off at. And, unlike you, I had time to slow down quite a bit.

That must have been VERY scary not being able to stop!!!
