bfg muds vs. mtr

OK, this is sort of like by previos baja claw post, but only a little. Well i've talked to some people at the local 4wheel parts and they said their first choice would be goodyear mt/r's and their second would be bfg muds. They said swampers are great but won't be that good for my 80 mile drive to take the jeep wheeling. Any way, between the bfg mt's and goodyear mtr's, which would you go with? the bfg's are $158 a tire for 33's and the mtr's are $212/tire for 33's. The jeep will see just about every terrain I can throw at it. I have next week off so hopefully i'll have the tires by then.

RE: Re: RE: Re: TOP DOWN!!!

The MTR/S arent too great in mud, too bad that california doesnt have any. The BFG's are cheaper so thats a plus. They are good in mud, they are good on dirt, and they are ok on rocks. MTR/S are more expensive, they arent so good in mud, they are good on dirt, and great on rocks. Dont make as much road noise as the BFG. If your running more rocks that mud get the MTR/S. If you plan on running muddy rutted out trail get the BFG MT.

Well, which is more important: maximum enjoyment on the trip to go wheeling.......or maximum enjoyment while wheeling? I'm not saying Swampers are the best choice if road manners are a big concern, but what is the primary use of the Jeep? If you are going to go with one of those two, there are much cheaper alternatives that will provide similar results.

Anyway to answer your question, I'd choose the BFG. The MTR is probably a better all around tire, but not for the money.

RE: Just got back from Moab

I got MTRs..work good, no problems, i'd reccomend them..shop around..i managed to get mine for 150 a tire. Goodyear places wanted 200+ Call the little tire stores, they give the best deals

Re: RE: Adventures in the Gadget Cave

If I could get them at comparable prices, I'd pick the MT/R's, but they are not comparably priced. They are both excellent tires. Both will last long if you keep them rotated. The BFG will do a little better in the mud (although I feel the MT/R's are better than most folks give them credit for) and the MT/R's will be a little better in the snow and rain.

 Man they're overpriced.

Don't worry about a swamper on the drive to the trail, I often drive my bias-ply Swamper TSL/SX's the 2hr drive to our local offroad park. Like Junkpile said, what's more important? It's more important to me that I make that next mudhole or hill even if I have to winch everybody with radials and MT/R's through or up it ;)

Check out the 32" TSL Radial for a good all-around tire, aggressive offroad while maintaining decent onroad manners. Less than $130 each generally.

And of the two you mentioned, get the BFG MT. It outshines the MT/R in most offroad situations I've seen here in the Midwest, and will last longer onroad. NOT TO MENTION THEY COST A LOT LESS :D

RE: Ever see these pictures

BFG gets my vote. Unless you like throwing benjamin's out the window just to see how far they fly. 212 for 1 tire is ridiculous. But apparently, the MT/R's have a super-tough sidewall.

heres a vote for the BFG M/T's - had Goodyear b/4 and had problems w/them... i really like the BFG MT's - they're actually better than the A/T's in the rain and grip really well on rocks - sling lots more mud and ride pretty quiet ... and if they hold up like my old A/T's i'll be with them for years (had my old BFG A/T's for 5 yrs and couldn't wear them out b/4 getting rid of my old 91 jeep...)

RE: 700R4 compatability & TH400

I would definately go BFG Mt for Mud/Dirt Goodyear MTR's for rocks.

im shoppingf at te moment too,
try costco, I found they are 141.87/tire installed/bal/disposal...

Im in NH, I think costco is nationwide, or sams...

Town fair tire said when i make up my mnd, theyll beat costco by 5%.

MTR/S really do stick to rocks!

RE: gauges quit working?

well unless you are dead set on those 2, i would reccomend looking into the Pro Comp M/T. I have them on my 99 that i drive at least 50 miles a day on road, and they still look as good as when i got em about 2 years ago. They have great grip on rocks, and hold their own in mud and snow.

RE: oil pressure

sully, is that at the con' ???Are those RE springs? If so how do you loke them? Still planning a trip this july or aug?

That's my friend's yj. He has pro comp springs and says even though everyone says pro comp is trash they work fine. I have seen them in action and they work. Those pics were taken at johnson valley. He will be at rubicon with me in July.

I don't think they're trash, I've just never seen a set that actually flexed. I'm sure it's possible to break in a set so they move, or remove one leaf, that would help.

I'm sure they last, with their lack of movement.
