Not to beat this to death or anything...
but I cant decide on tires!
Im getting 33x12.5s

i got my sweet 15x10 cragar 398s from Qtec today and Im getting antsy!

I can get the BFG at/ko cheapest @ $133 installed,
then the kumho MT @ 159, and the most expensive of the ones im looking at are
BFG MTs @ 161 installed.

I drive 80%+ HWY so I want something that will last at least 30K
I dont want slicks in the rain either.

I read the offroad.com write up on the kumhos, and i like them the most.
That white CJ looks awesome wth the kumhos! Thats the size Im getting.
I just know that the atko will last 50000 miles, and is cheaper.
Will I be let down on the trail with the atko?
Even though Ive had my YJ for 3 years I have rarely been off road, mainly becaise of the rusty suspension system, which will be replaced in 2 weeks by a RE 4". So I will be tearing it upp soon!

Anyway opinions, comments would be great

RE: Cheap 4X4

If you plan on doing any offroading, I would stay away from the ATs. Just my opinion. No the muds aren't as good on road but they weren't designed to. You got to give a little to get decent performance off road.

I have over 15,000 on my BFG mt's and the tread is holding up very well, so i am sure u will get over 30K. I have also read on here that people like the Kumho's too but for 2 bucks i would just go ahead and get the BFG's.

For $2 more per tire the BFG would be a no brainer if you decide on getting a mud terrain.

The BFG AT's are great tires in every aspect except deep mud. If you like hitting the deep stuff and you have AT's buy a winch ;) (from my own past experience with those tires)

Are you sure that price is right on the Kumhos and BFGs? I know when I bought my Kumhos, they were about $70 a tire cheaper, but that's been a few years. At any rate, I got at least 60,000 miles out of each set of Kumhos I ran, and they were fine on road, and not near as noisy as the BFGs I had before them. IMHO, if you're going to get ATs, you'd be better off trying to wheel in the mud with a Corvette with racing slicks.....they SUCK!!!!!!!

Quoting Sparky Watts:

"Are you sure that price is right on the Kumhos and BFGs?"

I thought that sounded wierd too..?
Big name brand BFG v relativly unheard of kumho.

But everywhere I call around here in Sothern NH, I mean everywhere (havent tried mass yet) they want more for the kumho, IF THEY can get it.
No one has it in stock for like 5 days and they all ask me... "why the kumho?" You can get the bfg MT, better known and is established...

that write up on offroad.com really tainted me - i want the kumho!
But if you guys think its a no brainer to go with the BFG MT at that close of a price difference then Ill shift my research to them. tirerack says they behave well (as do the kumho) in all situations.
man I cant wait til this is over! I dont know what is so great about shopping, its a pain in the arse.

Thanks for all your help, I will post all pics when I get this done, I have even got a ton of pics from when i rebuilt my 4.2, I plan to put a site together for those like me who need to know what they are getting into before starting a large project.

thanks all

Check out Tire Rack for price comparisons ans specifications:
BFG: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/Spec....false&fromCompare1=yes&partnum=325QR5MTAKMRWL
Kumho: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/Spec....h=false&fromCompare1=yes&partnum=325QR5VMTOWL
The BFG's measure a little larger in both height and width, and have a little deeper tread depth. These differences are however pretty small.

Looking at the two, the tread blocks are tighter on the Kumho, which would be good for tire wear and road manners, but not as good in the mud.

The BFG also has a groove between the outer tread blocks which is supposed to help them self-clean. I couldn't tell you if that helps or is a gimmick, but it is a difference between the two.

The BFG also have an outer bead which protects the wheels from curba nd rock rash.

The Kumho's are alot cheaper at the Tire Rack though... might be an option if shipping isn't too expensive, but you might pay more for mounting and balancing if you carry a set in to a shop instead of buying their products.

SugaMamas

I just got new tires last fall (33 x 12.50's on a '95 YJ). I had Goodyear MTR and absolutely hated them!! One drop of water on the road and I was water skiing. I rear-ended 2 or 3 people and had more close calls as a result.

I went with ProComp X-terrain and I love 'em. Highly recommended. I generally don't like much ProComp stuff, but it's the tires are the one exception that I've made. They even came recommended to me from other Pro-Comp haters. They'll be a little higher at around $180-$190 installed depending on where you get 'em. Heres a link...

RE: Re: What Da Heck Is It?

I like the red ones inspired by Mud4feet!

LOL!

BTW thanks for being so helpful guys

RE: Cheap 4X4

Check out the Super Swamper Trxus. I got to see them for the first time this week. I like it alot. A guy I work with liked them so much he ordered a set of 33s mounted on some MT classic II wheels this weekend for his Dodge. The guy at NTW said it was supposed to be a long lasting tire. I don't know about offroad performance, but they looked good, rode good, and were not as noisy as my little BFG MTs.
I'll get a better look at them after my co-workers set comes in wednesday or thursday. Now that I have seen them, I think want to put a BB and a set of those on my wifes WJ next tire change.

RE: 94 4.0 HO I6 with a rough idling problem

If all the prices you find are that close, go with the BFG Mud Terrain without even thinking twice.

But, there should be better deals on the Kumho's, like others have said.

RE: triple weber set up

Actually, as far as tire wear, I got better wear out of my Kumhos than the BFGs by about 15-20,000 miles. I think the BFGs are slightly softer. As far as self cleaning, I couldn't tell any difference between the two, both would clean at around 20 mph. I think even in they were more expensive, I'd still go back to Kumho before I'd go back to BFG. I don't do much in the way of airing down or rock crawling, so the tougher sidewalls in the BFGs don't make any difference to me.

bfg, kumho, bfg, kumho..

man this is tough, ill keep looking for a better deal on the kumhos, if I cant find one ill go with the bfgs. From what you guys say, they are neck and neck.

If it were up to me Id be out in AZ or CA doing desert runs etc. Thats always been the real reason I always wanted a jeep. I never really cared for the mud so much. Watching old baja races was so cool when they were on espn. Haulin arse jumpin sand dunes...
But here in NH where Ill be for at least another year, Ill be doing tons of muddy, rocky, forest trails. Also snow travel. So grip on various sufaces is very important.

thanks for all of you guy's input, for the lift questions, the wobbly steering issues, tire recomendations, and even the weber, and engine rebuild issues i was having 2 years ago.

thanks
