Police in Tijuana Issued Sling Shots

TIJUANA, Mexico (AP) -- The police department has issued about 60 slingshots to officers in the violent border city of Tijuana, where soldiers confiscated police weapons two weeks ago on allegations of collusion with drug traffickers.

Municipal police spokesman Fernando Bojorquez said Monday that the slingshots, along with bags of ballbearings, were given to officers patrolling areas of the city visited by tourists.

Tijuana's police force of 2,000 officers has been without guns since Jan. 5, but some patrol alongside armed state police.

President Felipe Calderon sent 3,300 soldiers and federal police to Tijuana at the beginning of January to hunt down drug gangs. The soldiers swept police stations and took officers' guns for inspection amid allegations by federal investigators that a corrupt network of officers supports smugglers who traffic drugs into the U.S. The weapons are still being checked.

About 100 police demonstrated outside Tijuana town hall on Monday demanding the return of their guns. "The arms are our tools for work," said officer Juan Manuel Nieves. "Do they want more police to be killed?"

More than 300 people were slain in Tijuana last year including 13 police officers.

Sounds to me like there is too much government involvement in the drug trade down there.

Either that or they are just as naive as the extreme left wingers that agree with the likes of Ted Kennedy who wants to take guns out of the hands of our law-abiding citizens.

But hey, in MD they are in the process of getting rid of the death penalty and the newly elected governor has vowed to make gun laws stricter. Maybe he should go to Mexico and do a case study for a year or so before he proceeds ;)
One or the other. Maybe both.

I need some history lessons or something... Tijuana is in mexico? why is there american police?

I didn't read anything about U.S. police being there, but as for America, Mexico is in North America

Who the hell cares anyways its mexico they do what ever they want.. your the only one who pays attention. Give them a bag full of rocks hell there probably helping them get into America!!

I saw this last week or so, the slingshots were more of a protest than anything.

Tijuana police and all border policeman for that matter (on the Mexico side) are so corrupt it's freaking stupid. This really doesn't surprise me at all.

Keep in mind, there are several murder investigation and allegations of involvement in the drug trade, hence why the guns were confiscated. I don't have a problem with that. If a police force is involved in drug trafficking, someone's got to police them. Crooked cops are a HUGE problem down there.

What they should have done was suspend the entire force, and put in troops. (yes Mexico has an army)

I've had to give cash to cops in Juarez.

That's just it, the cops in Tijuana aren't law-abiding citizens.

We had a guy in college was taken off a tour bus and mugged by police in Mexico. Luckily they didn't realize his friend was on the bus with him so he went to the embassy. Wehhn Govt officials went looking into it, the kid was dumped off in an alley in the middle fo some small town and left. I think if the govt wasn't involved he would have gone missing.
I just think of the movie "Man On Fire" I don't think what happened was far from the truth on how the police are run down there.

seems like firing the crooked ones would be a better idea than arming them with slingshots and paying their salaries though

They didn't arm them with slingshots. The way I understood it, they cops themselves did that as a protest.

Well the Associated Press reports otherwise (see article posted at beginning of thread).

Either way, taking their guns is both insane and cruel. Who the hell would wear a badge without a firearm?!?!?!

Gee - it worked so well for the Brits

I heard in Great Britain if you get caught committing a crime the police will throw their keys at you.:purple: :purple: :purple: :purple:

kind of like the "Mall Police" do around here while wearing a sloppy security uniform and a "Smokey Bear" hat.:)

Well 90XJay,
I've allways had guns and always will have them, my Mom did and still does, But when I F@@ked up I remember many times she would Throw her keys at me and I straightened up right away and boy I sure watched my act if she had a hair brush handy. Personaly I think everyone should own , carry and be very familiar with at least one gun . commit a crime , go to jail period . But then I live in the same state that let OJ run wild and I wont even try to tell you how hard it is to find things in english not spanish at places like the DMV or social security office ....so what do I know

I think they ought to give them all air soft guns. Those little plastic BB's really smart... especially the heavy white ones.
