ax5 question

probably a dumb question but ill ask anyway :roll:

im looking at a 94 yj and its the 4 banger with the ax5. the sticker says that there is no fifth gear. i havent driven it because i just seen it about 10 minutes ago and they were closed. i got in the jeep and it will shift into fifth, but im guessing fifth gear probably wont do anything. what could be the cause? im guessing its just new transmission time.

I just recently have had problems with 5th gear in my ax5. I need a new transmission.

it seems that the ax5 has a lot of 5th gear problems... i know a few people around town who have lost 5th gear in their ax5... and remember the ol' BigMF incident long ago? there was a transmission sold with no 5th gear... it is common with the ax5.. unless you plan on swapping it soon, i wouldn't buy it... or have them take the price of a new transmission off the jeep

Since you're asking opinions... I'd hold out for a 4.0 YJ with the AX-15, or even the automatic. The only way that jeep is worth taking home is if it's got a solid motor and the total cost of the jeep is under $2000.

Very common with the AX5, as the clip that retains 5th on the shaft breaks when the synchros go bad. This allows 5th gear to slide on the shaft, and when you put it into 5th when driving the engine revs just like in neutral.

It's an easy fix, as the clip is the first one you come to when dissassembling the transmission. But, it will happen again unless the synchronizers are replaced.

Chances are the broken clip is still in the transmission, meaning you have large metal chunks that are loose in there. I drove several thousand miles like this with no problems, but it's no guarantee.

If it's got larger tires chances are you won't use 5th anyway, but you'll at least want to fish the broken clip out of the transmission. Chances are it's stuck to the magnetic drain plug. If there's any doubt, pass up this jeep.

well i drove it today, and i am passingit up. there is some serious blow-by in the air filter. needed a new transmission for sure, made a nice banging noise when shifting into gear. needed a windshield too. told the salesman that i was being generous and offered him 1300. he told me that he would not move from his 3000 dollar price :roll: ......oh well his loss. he is not gonna sell that pyle for 3 grand!
