I have finally finished swapping out the Peugeot with the AX15. I now have a new problem. Just for reference, it is an 89 AX15, 94 bellhousing, external clutch slave, 4.2 motor. I rebuilt the transmission and in the process had to replace the counter 5th gear as well as the syncros and bearings. Everything seemed to go together good. All shifted fine on the bench, but I noticed that the 5th gear sleeve didn't slide all the way off of the 5th syncro. It did disengage the hub though. I was told by a few others that this wouldn't matter as long as the hub was disengaged. Now to the problem. I can shift into and out of the first 4 gears with no problem. When I go to 5th gear, it does not come out of 5th. To get it out I have to put it in neutral, shift the tcase into 4Low, and go a few feet until it pops out of 5th. I then have to go into reverse before shifting into 1st or there is a very loud whine. As long as I do the above procedure, it shifts fine. Until I hit 5th gear again. Any input would be GREATLY appreciated.
Additional info. When I put everything together, the 5th syncro ring was somewhat snug on the hub. Jeepdoc, where I bought some of the parts, told me this was normal on 5th and would loosen up with driving. Was this wrong info? Could this be the problem? If so, is there a fix other than taking it all apart again?
