I'm putting a yj ax15 in my xj and I was wondering if the yj shifter would work or not in the xj and what all do I need to do the conversion this is my first one iv done
the Ax 15 was made in 2 versions; 2WD and 4WD; Dakotas YJs TJs and XJs all used this transmission. the only differences are they changed something about the 5th gear synchro inside in/around 1992, and the bellhousing between the 2.5 (same as they used in Dakotas 91+) the 4.0L and the Dakota 3.9.
I just got done rebuilding my AX 15 out of my 97 TJ within the last few days.
I sold one I had here from a 93 Dakota to a guy needing one for a 2WD XJ and all he had to do was to put his bellhousing on.
there is also a difference in bellhousings between internal slave and external slave cylinder models. that change was made in about '93+ as well.
You can use the same transfer case, it's the holes around the AX15 output that are in a different location between the YJ and XJ transmissions. The YJ raises the front output of the transfer case up so it doesn't hang as low, may interfere with the XJ tub. You can massage the tub for clearance.
