Alaska

I think I am going to start looking for a job in Alaska. I don't knew what yet, I just need something that will help pay off $50k of school loans. I've heard of people working in oil fields making $75k a year. I'm 20 and have no other obligations holding me to where I live now, so I figured why not. Anyone have any suggestions of where to start?

well you sure don't have to go all the way Alaska if you don't want to.
THe oilfield called the Great Basin, which starts close to Grand Junction, Colorado and goes into Utah and neighboring states, it BOOMING big time
You can find work there no problem.
And have all the beauty of Colorado and Utah right there.
Do you have any skills, like welding?

For the most part now, they just want someone who can learn and wants to work and is drug free.

Just a side note,
At a construction site last month, some oil production company went onto a jobsite and hired away the welders, they offered them 3500 dollars cash each to go to work in the oilfield, and they walked off the job

The oil companies are loosing money due to lack of labor.

JOIN THE ARMY!

yeah....check out the boats for sure. A friend of mine used to go up there for a few months each year......he made more in three months then most people make all year.

I have friends who work in the oil fields up in northern Canada close to Alaska and they're making huge $$$. One friend who has been there for over 10 years and has moved up in the industry is bringing home over $300,000/year (Canadian). They tell me that a lot of the guys there go into camp for their 2 weeks of work then come out and blow it all on drugs, booze and women. They're broke after their days off so they go back and do it all over again. Another friend is up there working as an electrician for the oil companies. He's pulling in $15-20 thousand/month depending how much he wants to work. They not only pay him his wages but also $140 day for his truck if he drives it to a job site and $140 day for his quad if it's needed to get to a job site (of course he needs the truck to pull the quad so automatically gets paid for both when the quad is needed) They also tell me that there's a lot of guys up there on 5 year plans to make some big cash then move back home and pay off their house ect.
Oh ya. Gotta watch out for them moose up there. Here's a picture he sent me just today of his F-350 after hitting a moose on the highway.

It sounds like I need to start getting some welding certifications. I can lay a descent bead, I'm just not rated for anything, espaecially TIG. What's the chances of a company paying for my schooling to be AWS certified?

If you have a work center or similar office who places employees, that may be a good place to start asking, but it does not sound to far fetched.

Had a buddy from high school who went up to Alaska his sophomore year (dropped out of school) to weld on the pipelines. Last I heard he was making upwards of $250,000 a year, owns his own airport with 5 charter planes, 10,000 acres of land, and a fleet of crabbing boats. All with no high school education.....

yeah, but you know he would be even happier today if he had went to college and dropped $150,000 on an education......

I am sure your buddy is not the norm....there are lucky *******s in every walk of life.

Go to the nearest IBEW local that has jusisdiction for "Outside Power" and tell them you want to be a lineman.

I have very fond memories of travelling around, meeting interesting people, and bringing them light. The money was great, too ;)

Ya, fishing in alaska definatly pays good money. I don't know about oil drilling or anything else like that up there....but if you find the right fishing outfit, you could easily bring in well over $20k/month.

There was no luck involved...it was all hard work, blood, sweat and tears.
