Air intake

I am looking to junk my stock air filter/box.
I want a cone style air cleaner for my 1990 Cherokee 4.0

Knowing of the PCV problems with these motors, I still have not done anything to mine but I have very little oil staining on my filter between oil changes.

Any suggestions, without spending a ton of toad skins???

i just cut a big hole in the bottom of my stock air box and popped in a K&N drop-in filter... it gave it a super low tone which sounded strong... cost like 45 bucks and a few minutes with the dremel to get it done.

Knowing of the frequent problems with the PCV systems, i figure that the factory knows whats best with the design of the whole system and this mod made the most sense to me. also keep in mind that this filter is washable and carries a million-mile warranty.

I modded my stock air box on my YJ to get the same results. Worked like a charm. Rustys also has a good cheap tube, to which you affix a cone filter.

I agree with dingus and laneiac. Just a drop in K&N and modify the stock air filter box to let in more air.

Dingus,
Which K&N are you talking about, a cone or rectangle filter?

Re: RE: Re: attn: Robrt-Stephens

I know I'm not Dingus, but I used the rectangular one on mine...of course it is a YJ, so it's probably different..

RE: Re: RE: Re: attn: Robrt-Stephens

no no i used the rectangular one as well, it is the exact same filter as the stock one, just using K&N Technology with the filter, you get better air flow plus the warranty and the ability to clean it if it gets dirty. (so if your PCV valve is blowin' oil by, you can just clean your filter every now and then to avoid the blowby problem)

i don't understand cutting out the air box :?: :?:

Using this picture for reference (not sure if its exactly the same...) but if u look at it, the rectangular filter sits at the top of it (above the circular hole there...)

now, when i cut mine, i just cut the "bottom half" of the airbox OFF, basically, below that hole. i was careful to not disrupt any of the mounting points, you dont need that thing floppin' around in there!

RE: Re: RE: Re: attn: Robrt-Stephens

I would go with a "drop-in" K&N instead of the cone also. My first Jeep had one and I plan to do it on my XJ. I always viewed those cones as big sponges for water crossings.

yes, good point. another thing i forgot to mention is that if you plan your cut-job carefully, you can also leave a little splash shield in the event that you hit something deep.

Great info Dingus!
And thanks everyone.
I think I know where I am headed with this upgrade.

The K&N sounds good because you can keep cleaning it outl

:D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

Well, I hope you guys aren't hacked off at me, but I went on and ordered this

My stock airbox is really in rough shape. I don't get through much water here in Texas. I have been told these things help HP and MGP.

I hope to have it by this weekend.
BTW, the guy who owns xj-armor.com actually took my order and he is one cool guy with a good supply of awesome things for our rigs.

good choice with the cone filter... it will serve you better than just cutting out the box. i've hit plenty of water with my jeep and never had a problem... and i know you'll get better hp/mpg results with the cone over modifiying the box.

Hey guys I got in my new air tube and K&N filter in from XJ Armor and after about a 20 minute install, I am completly happy. I took a little time and trimmed some vent lines and it really cleaned up under the hood area.

You can almost hear the increase in airflow, the thing has a good throaty sound to it. I know with the tube and K&N I should see increased HP, but I don't know if what I am feeling in the throttle response is all true HP or just that good feeling you get from doing a good clean upgrade to your rig.

Seriously, it does feel more responsive and peppy, looks great, and sounds great.

I took a few extra minutes and cleaned the throttle body with a good sensor safe cleaner also.
