A/C and power issues for 00 Cherokee

My A/C would not blow cold air the last time I used it and it smelled like a barn as well. When I shut it off there was a gurgling noise coming from the passenger side of the engine and a slight burnt rubber smell. Now the engine will not start up unless it gets a jump. No power to anything. Any suggestions? :-? [addsig]

Any time I smell burnt rubber cut the engine and check your wires. You got something burning. I have definitely been down that road before. Some wire from the starter slips onto the header to exhaust pipe and then you have your starter grounded out.[addsig]

No wires that I could see. Took to the shop and was told the a/c compressor had seized and was causing the serpentine belt to burn which, according to them, is causing the alternator to malfunction[addsig]

Yes, that sounds right on. If the drive belt stops turning or turns slower than normal, the alternator can't put out enough power for the vehicle. This lack of power was causing the Jeep to run only from the battery, which went dead as a result. If the battery has been completely discharged several times, it may need to be replaced as standard car batteries aren't designed for that kind of abuse .

About the A/C, don't take the cheap way out. Don't let a shop just replace the compressor without flushing the system, as parts of the failed compressor might be in the lines :-O. Make sure anything suspected of being clogged is replaced so the problem doesn't happen again.

Good Luck

Thanks for the info Nick. The A/C system is getting pretty much completly overhauled and at no cost to me thank god. Amazing what a few angry phone calls to the GM of the dealership can get you![addsig]
