99 Wrangler Rear dif drive line leak

I have a 99 Wrangler with 70k and the rear driveline seal is leaking at the dif. I have a Haynes book but is is not very clear and does not explain enough about the dana 35 pinion gear preloading. Anybody have any information on how difficult it is to change out this seal without messing up the preloading on reassembly?

I'm looking for this info too, need to replace the pinion seal on my D35.

I can install the seal easy enough, I just don't want to mess anything up with the crush sleeve. TIA.

Look up the torque specs for the pinion nut. It is probably on a different chart separate from the instructions on how to change the seal.
You may have to get a Chilton's book. Sometimes Haynes isn't that thorough.

Ford Knuckle??????

yeah but the problem is you can only tourqe that puppy down once and that's it for the crush collar. i blew up my front end cause i didnt replace the crush collar when i replace the bearing and seals. pinion worked its way into the ring crating 2 inch of metal shaving in my diff!

Thanks for the info. So how would you put in a new crush sleeve and get the preloading the same as before? Maybe this is something that I should take to a shop and have done.....

your going to need more than a hayns manual you might have to find some info on that axle itself. i just started to install my gears and noticed that my instructions werent that clear on how to set up pinion depth, but i think i got it right anyway if i find any info ill let you know
