97 Grand Cherokee Rebuild

Im new to the site and found this place while looking for info. I have a 97 Grand Cherokee full time 4wd that has hi-milage. Its my daily driver. I was thinking about trading it in on a new vehical but i think it will be more economical for me to spend some cash and rebuild the jeep. Im not new to cars, but I am new to working on jeeps(im a chevy guy). I am just looking for some suggestions as to what i should do. My plan is as follows...kind of lengthy im sorry

Engine: Rebuild, would like to reuse the crank, rods, and pistons if possible. i would like ot line hone the mains and ballance the rotating assembly. a new timing set and some kind of a roller rocker. id like to upgrade the cam, nothing radical, just slightly more...so this means new lifters too. id like to clean up the heads, new valves, valve job, and new springs.

Trans-XCase: rebuild trans, with a slightly higher stall converter (2000?) id liek to upgrade to kevlar clutches and new steels. some kind of a shift kit and an external cooler. are there any pump upgrades available?

I dont know much about the transfer case. I dont really do any real hard core off roading in it, but i still would like to rebuild it. Any suggestions would be great. And while Im at it, I plan to check front and rear diffs, for wear and backlash. Replace any worn parts, bearings...

Suspension-Steering: It needs new shocks, Id like to upgrade them to something more heavy duty, I do alot of city driving and the roads are real bad. New buchings for sway bars, control arms and such. Id like to upgrade to a poly bushing. I was even thinking about maybe a small suspension lift, like 3 inches.

then i Just need a few mics parts under the hood and inside, but they arnt any big deal. my problem lies in that i am not framiliar with jeeps. if this were a chevy id feel more comfortable. like as far as a cam goes, i dont even know whats in it now so its hard to pick an upgrade. thanks for the help :)

RE: sway bar

if you are going to go offroad with this vehicle, I would simply re-use/replace a factory stall converter.

The motor in the jeep is very simple to work on, you didn't state that you had either a 6 or 8 cyl.

Instead of rebuilfint the np242 You could save some gas milage by switching to a np231 out of a Yj or TJ jeep. this will eliminate the full time 4wd, and make it simple 2wd
