Hey all. I have a '94 Grand Cherokee Laredo, 4.0 Auto 4x4 that will not shift out of 1st gear. Truck ran fine Saturday and today won't shift at all. Can anybody point out where I may want to look? This is the 2nd transmission in 188k miles and was a rebuild at the time...

i have a 93 xj that did the same thing the other day, and it wouldnt shift into overdrive today. i had to shut it off then start it up again to get it to work ok. from what i have found out so far (at least for the xj) is that the tcu (transmission control unit) or the shift solinoids get iffy... they say to unplug the tcu and try to shift it manually through the gears... if it works then its a tcu issue. if still wont shift its a solinoid issue. again, this if for the xj, so i am not sure if its the same for the gc...

Do these new trannies have a kick down cable (or linkage)? If so, make sure it is working correctly and adjusted - not binding up. If the kick down is not set up right it can hold the transmission in first gear no matter what the lever is in (1,2, or D). Best of luck - John
