I have a 91 wrangler. A few days ago the battery died, after i put a new battery in the jeep was misfiring and dying while in the lower gears, and the battety wasnt holding a charge. Ive changed the alt and bat and had them both tested at several locations where they checked out. Ive also ruled out the ignition resister and the problem persists.

Voltage regulator, which chrysler was kind enough to put in the pcm...and as I have found out it is part of the mother board so it is not a replaceable part. You have to change the pcm

can you just wire in an alt with a voltage regulator in it?

Option 1: Get a single wire alternator, swap the serp. pulley Napa has them for under 100 bucks. 213-4011sw (stands for single wire) Great option in any build, farmers use them forever.

Option2: Go to Napa and buy a VR38 or VR38SB (cheaper) This is a chrysler external voltage regulator. Pretty simple to wire up, there should be a diagram in the box. To make it beautiful buy the VRC38 (factor connector) this will make it easy to wire up and keep mud out.

You will have to put electrical tape over the idiot light

Happy trails.
