it can. there are a few little different pieces. you are keeping all the newer fuel injection and accessories? if so, it should go right in because I think differences are just minor and mostly cosmetic, if you are just doing the heavy stuff.

an 89 xj had different fuel injection than your yj

The block will work but the sensors are different and you might have to switch over distributors,the Renix control system the 89 has in not compatible
