700R4 or TH 350?

Hi, I am putting all of my conversion plans together for my engine (350) /transmission swap. Would you recommend a 700r4 or th350? The biggest size tire that I will go is 35 X 16. I will still do a good bit of highway driving though. Will that be too much stress on the transmission. I have the 4.10 gears in the diff now, will eventually go 4.88. But for now, will those 35's be too much stress on transmission for highway driving?

I´m not a big fan of the 700R4, it does have a low first gear and an overdrive fourth. But pretty much as regular as clockwork, I have to replace mine at 45,000 miles or so. The second time I replaced it; it was with a built and expensive HD model, that didn´t last any longer than the rest. Aux oil cooler didn´t help, niether did an oversized (deep) pan. Even put in a temp. gauge, so I could tell when the temp. got too high.
Have the original T350 (non lock up converter) in a 71 Chev one ton, second motor. Use the one ton as a tractor, 33X15.50´s, the T350 leaks some, but never a wimper.
The 4135 (I think, getting old and forgetful) is a better choice, than the 700R, they built it for a couple of years, then changed to the 4135E. The 4135 is hard to come by.

Agreed they were designed as a car transmission then made (or just tossed into trucks) I have had a couple and they are a pain in the a$$. Shift into fourth at 30mph drove me nuts. And yes you can fix it but it mainly is a bandaid job not really a cure. The TH350 is proven to be the choice.

Of course there is always a manual. N4500 or has someone found a way to mount Fords new 6 speed yet??

Would I be better off getting that expensive adapter for a th350 to np231J, or would it be better to get a chevy t case? Will I need any kind of adapter witht a chevy t case? Will I waste too much gas on the highway with a th350?

I´m with BakedAlaskan. Gas mileage is kind of a relative thing. You´ll get better gas mileage than a full sized pick-up, with the same tires. The 35´s will probably hurt your mileage more than the 3 speed. Not just turning the extra wieght, but pushing a lot more air.

I smoked my 700R4 twice (only one was my fault...), much more expensive rebuilding it than to have the slightly lower gas mileage from the bomb proof TH350 :D
