I was on the highway today and I let off the gas. when I stepped back on 5th gear was gone. Anyone ever hear of this before and If so whats the fix? I have a '94 YJ with 2.5l four banger.

Were you in 5th gear first and just let off the gas or did you let off the gas, downshift, and then went back to 5th? And when you say "it was gone" does that mean you were in 5th but no power, or you shifted to the position of 5th and the engine revved like it was in neutral? Need more info.

He means it revved in 5th like it was in neutral, had it happen to me a few times. It's an easy fix, just a broken clip that holds 5th gear on the shaft, first gear you come to when removing the rear case from the transmission. Problem with just replacing the clip is that it's a bandaid fix, not addressing the real problem of bad synchronizers.

Either have the transmission rebuilt with new synchros, or find a used AX5. I drove mine for a long time as a 4speed with no trouble, but you do have chunks of metal floating around since that clip busted. The magnetic drain plug should hold the metal pieces in place.

it really is not an uncommon problem for the ax5... if you take the cover off... you can remove the metal that is floating around in there... then you can drive it as a 4 speed with no problems... but... if you are taking the transmission off... might as well replace it... look into an ax-15 with a dodge dakota 4cyl bellhousing

Thanks for your help. I know that I need to replace the transmission. I am also grinding into every gear. I dont have a lot of money to sink into it at the moment but since it isnt my only transportation Im willing to take it off the road and do a cheap (relatively) rebuild. Any ideas what parts I would need and a good (and cheap) place to get them? Im sure I need to do a synchro kit to cure the grinding. I live in staten Island, NY but work for and airline so I can pretty much go anywhere to find parts or even a used transmission if anyone has ideas. I really appreciate everyones help.

I'd say get a used AX5 and be sure to use the right fluid, not the crap DC recommended that ruined all the Aisin Warner trannies.

yeah your transmission has lived a life of neglect from bad gear oil.... you're not singing the brass synchro blues... in your new transmission, you'll need the synthetic Redline MT90 or the semi-synthetic Synchromesh fluid sold my GM or Pennzoil... Those will really keep the life up...

as for a rebuild... no no... shops won't want to do it if they know what they're getting into... it will cost just as much or more than a fully remanufactured transmission... look for a used, low mile transmission or go all out and get a Reman
