4 spd or 5 spd

i have a 1986 jeep 4 wheel drive automatic 2.8 liter. Any one know if this model is a 5 pd or 4pd again it is and automatic, the reason i ask is because in the freeway it never shifts to 5th...and seems to rev pretty high ..??

how fast do you normally drive it on the highway? i'd say if its an automatic, its a 4 speed. i've never heard of a jeep with a 5 speed automatic. What RPM are you seeing at such normal speed?

i got my money on the 4 spd...with an auto, it will most of the time be higher on the highway...prolly bout 2-3 grandish

Assuming you have an XJ...

There is no 5 speed auto for the XJ and the AW4 4 speeds didn't show up until 1987...

If it is a stock transmission it should be a 904 or 909 3 speed auto:
