hey all....1989 jeep cherokee 4x4
my plan now is to put a 3" lift on it but i don't like the little straight 6 cyl engine that i have, i've been told that its possible to drop a deisil engine in and drop a better transmission also.. my question is.. is that possible and what is a good size deisil engine..?? i would like to build up a good off road vehicle and i like jeeps.. and thank you all for your replies last time

well that "little" straight 6 has plenty of power. its possible to drop a lot of things in there so why dont we start with the question of why do you want to go diesel? heres a link to a jeep diesel conversion forum

if you really want to do a swap like that and have it still streetable, the venerable chevy 350 is a good way to go, there are lots of transmissions that bolt to it and will still leave your jeep driveable around town.

my best advice, keep your 4.0, throw in a high performance cam, bore it over, do all those little things if you want more power because the 4.0 is plenty of power for an xj on 31's or 32's.

theres a thread in the cj yj tj forum about this: http://jeepz.com/index.php?name=PNphpBB2&file=viewtopic&t=326744

RE: TROUBLE w/ TRANSFER BOX ON

Here's another vote for keeping the I-6... I don't know the technical details on what you can do to it to make it perform more, mine's only 5 years old, and I have not needed to tear it apart yet... But I do know that it is the engine that will not die, or at least, is the case for all Jeep I have seen putting it through the wringer... And it's easy to work on...

Just my opinion.
