1989 cherokee suddenly shuts off?

I have a 1989 cherokee. Lately it has been going dead (engine just stalls) while I'm driving. Its starts right back up, but the sudden shut down is not good for traffic flow. Any ideas on where to start troubleshooting? I put 6 brand new NAPA fuel injectors on a few months ago. Thanks for your help.

check the fuel filters, you may have junk in the line that is plugging them up.

Graewulf,
Filters? As in plural? I know about the one under the car back near the fuel pump...and I will check that one. Is there another?

Not positive but most vehicles have a second one in the tank attached to the pump. I haven't been inside a jeep tank to see if they do or not. any further diagnostic on when it stalls?

rear sway bar?

The cherokee dies in the first 5 mintues of operation. Once its warm, its fine. Is there a temp sensor that could shut off the whole engine? Or what sensor stops monitoring engine functions after about 5 minutes? I think that's what I need to replace. Thanks for your help.

Hi,

the best place to start is the Crankshaft Position Sensor (CPS), which is located on the top driver's side of the transmission bellhousing. This sensor can and will cause random stalling/ no start conditions if the computer looses its signal, or if it is sending out false information.

I agree - it sounds electrical. Probably when the engine reaches a certain temp a sensor shuts down/gives false readings. Does it just shut off like you turned the key, or does it seem like its runnign out of gas?

check your vacuum lines, i got mine back from the dealer after getting worked on one day and drove down the road and coasted in neutral and it just shut off. it kept doing this so i finally pulled over and looked under the hood and found a loose line. connected it back up and that was that.

RE: Re: Detroit or ARB in rear DANA 44?

XJnick,
Thanks again. I did replace the crankshaft position sensor, and it did solve the problem. I just forgot to say thanks to all the forum writers who offered suggestions. Sorry it took me so long to say thanks. Its cool to get help when troubleshooting the jeep :-)
