    ZJ Stuttering

I did a little poking around online at work the other day, and it led to checking the connections at the PCM. I drove home the slow way (which doesn't involve speed limits over 70) and the CEL actually went out and the problem didn't show up at all. I know better than to declare victory until...

    ZJ Stuttering

So that seemed to fix the issue for about a week or so, and juuuuust as I was about to declare victory, it's back. This time it died on the way home from work twice, *but* it started throwing codes finally. I have P0108 and P0351, which would point to MAP high voltage, and... Crank sensor...

    ZJ Stuttering

So, based on my gut instinct (which is usually fairly accurate) I pulled the tank today and swapped fuel pumps. I'm 99.9% sure that was the problem, because the strainer was so dirty it wouldn't allow light through, and the fuel that came out of the filter output when I turned the old pump on...

    ZJ Stuttering

Based on the fact that this has happened on multiple tanks of gas from multiple different gas stations I'm pretty confident we can rule out bad gas. As for ice, I suppose it's possible since it does freeze at night, but during the day when this is happening it's between 40 and 50 degrees F...

    ZJ Stuttering

@jpinpa: I don't have a scan tool that can read those. If I unplug it it should run in an open loop, though, right? Bad fuel mileage but if the issue goes away that should point to the issue. Also, wouldn't that trigger some sort of CEL? It doesn't seem to happen at a specific temp or...

    ZJ Stuttering

so according to RockAuto, the filter assembly by itself is $100 or so... and the pump/strainer/sender/filter/regulator module is running about $75-100. At that point I think it'd be foolish to replace one part when the entire module is less.

    ZJ Stuttering

Hi all, I think I'm running into a fuel pump issue with my ZJ, but I'd like to bounce some ideas off the brain trust and see if I can confirm this. For the past couple months, when I'm on the freeway (97 ZJ 4.0 2wd) the truck will act like it's losing all engine power. There are no CELs, no...

1997 TJ stalling sputtering and backfiring when warm

Well, the TJ is backburnered for the moment, but I found a '97 ZJ 2WD that's got 230k on the clock and a nearly-immaculate interior, for a price I could afford. U-Haul won't rent to soft-top Jeeps, too, so that's solved (and for less than a new hardtop plus whatever head/machine shop work I...

1997 TJ stalling sputtering and backfiring when warm

I did hook up a noid light and it seemed to be pulsing normally not steady or anything.

1997 TJ stalling sputtering and backfiring when warm

Either way it looks like I'm taking the head off this weekend. On top of trying to find a secondary daily driver because this thing keeps letting me down this way and I have a 2000 mi trip coming up that I need 100% reliability for.

So I pulled off the fuel rail (I'm right there anyway, what harm can it do?) This is what I saw. The one on the left of the first image is #1, and the other 3 look the same. They're also different on the outside. Something seems off about that #1 injector. Edit: But it's totally not...

I have a line on a '90 Cherokee 4.0 that has a good engine/trans, and is a manual, so.... uh... how hard is this swap?

1997 TJ stalling sputtering and backfiring when warm

It's back again and it brought a friend! :x Was driving for a bit yesterday and the stuttering came back, then went away and was replaced by a misfiring and really crappy-running Jeep. As of this afternoon I have a P0320 (engine speed input circuit) P0301 *and* p0300, and my P0108 is back. It...

1997 TJ stalling sputtering and backfiring when warm

I haven't had a chance to check the voltages on the MAP or run any other tests, because the problem seems to have gone away and taken the CEL with it. I did unplug the MAP briefly yesterday and that may have moved some wires around that were possibly shorting together, however.

... All of the codes currently are P0108. Issues with cruise control and ABS are that they aren't equipped on the truck, and the fuel gauge is fine. The tach keeps jumping up the range from where it is when this issue starts.

1997 TJ stalling sputtering and backfiring when warm

Juuust kidding. :x it's back. The symptom went away for about a week, and now it's back. But with a P0108 claiming a MAP sensor high voltage. I've made sure both the grounds I tightened the first time are still tight (they are) and that the frame ground is tight... It idles perfectly fine...

1997 TJ stalling sputtering and backfiring when warm

*cough* I think I figured it out. this morning I disconnected the battery for 5 minutes to clear the codes and tightened the ground screws underneath the coil and then drove it for about 20 mins and it drove like a brand new Jeep. Now I feel like an idiot.

1997 TJ stalling sputtering and backfiring when warm

It idles pretty steadily around 5-600 RPMs. I bought the CKP from RockAuto (don't judge me, $100 for 3 sensors and a set of plug wires vs. 100 for a sensor in town). How does one reset the PCM on these things? I'm not getting any light flicker, just the tach sweep towards the top of the...

1997 TJ stalling sputtering and backfiring when warm

Hey everyone, I'm Tom, and I'm new here. I've been combing every forum online and every possible place I can think of, but I've got a doozy of a problem and it's stumping me. I have a '97 TJ 2.5L 4 cyl 5 speed. A couple of weeks ago, I was in the mountains on some windy roads and the truck...
