Body fab or Finally got the bug

After all this time I finally just figured out what kind of lift setup I want. It's a little depressing knowing that for now on a little part of me will be miserable until it all gets done. It's still gonna be a while thought because I prob won't be getting a second vehicle anytime soon and...

Got some dim side and back lights on the XJ

All the exterior lights on the XJ have gone dim over the years and I'm wondering if there's anything I can do to get them brighter short of upgrading to a newer type bulb. Everythings running fine electrically, but just the exterior bulbs seem dim themselves, and since the lenses and...

    Swapping out U bolts

With the 400 in parts and another 300 in tool/odds and ends I'm gearing up with to do this job another 30 ain't a whole lot. New U bolts are going in. Cheap peace of mind.

Where to get rear spring shackles just 1-2" higher

Yep thanks. Would that b b/c of the stationary pivot point which would be at the front suspension? Actually the lift I'm trying to achieve is b/t the top of the rear tire and bottom of the wheel well. Since I'm measuring what about 3/4 the way back from the front pivot point I'm guessing the...

    Swapping out U bolts

Hmm interesting, I'm getting suggestions for both resuing and replacing. One guy was saying to replace them unless I already had high quality aftermarket bolts in there. Do they have a tendency to break or something when they're old. I'm in a '96 so mine are 21 yrs. I'm always just on the road.

Rubber v. poly sway bar link bushing

Yeah that's my question too...whats the advantages of poly. I've heard they give a stiffer ride, but for bushings that effect steering maybe that'd be what you'd want. Would greasing once a year keep the poly quiet?

    Swapping out U bolts

I'm almost embarrassed to make this a thread, but I guess the only stupid question... With the S&!^ storm of information I've been absorbing lately I believe I was told that if I take the U-bolts off to do my leaf spring bushing swap out that I should put new ones back in. Is this true or...

Where to get rear spring shackles just 1-2" higher

Ok talk me out of this if I'm being stupid. But I'm wanting to update my bushings on the cheap for better steering and ride. In the rear I'm avoiding getting full leaf springs b/c of the cost, so I'm just gonna press some new ones in. Nother reason i'm avoiding new leafs is hopefully not...

Rubber v. poly sway bar link bushing

Yeah I know this is a nit picky question, but doing some suspension spruce ups on the old 96 XJ and I'm in the middle of looking at front sway bar links. The Moog has what looks like blue poly bushings, whereas the OMIX ADA has rubber bushings. Problem is I've been trying to go all rubber...

2 XJ questions and an identify this picture contest

Turns out those grills are to a 50s/60s Nash Metropolitan. Wonder what they're worth or where I'd go on the net to find out?

2 XJ questions and an identify this picture contest

I'm actually replacing the two front sway bar links (vertical pieces from the axle up to the sway bar), along with associated bushings and the two bushings that cushion the sway bar in the two brackets that attach it to the frame. Is #11 in that pic the track bar? I believe I replaced that...

!#@$*!$#!%$@#, !%^#$# - broke a rear top shock bolt off

Well title says it all. It was turning back and forth just a smidge too...so stupid me for putting too much force on it. From what I've been told just working it back and forth adding BP will eventually get it out. Any advice on what to do now that' it's just a sheered off bolt? It broke...

Is propane good enough for heating stuck bolts?

Yeah thanks. I've seen a vid where a guy got the bolts started out then used a pickle fork and vice grips to pry the bolt the rest of the way out of the bushing. I'm prob mostly concerned with getting the rear upper shock bolts out. Of course only the heads are exposed and the bar pin on the...

Which of these need either locktite or anti-seize?

Right on thanks for the advice. Might use some anti sieze on the upper shock mounts in the rear but that'll prob be it.

Which of these need either locktite or anti-seize?

The bolts I'm wondering about are... - upper and lower shock mounts, front and back - upper and lower control arm bolts - sway bar link to axle - sway bar link to sway bar - sway bar bracket to subframe - rear leaf spring bolts - going through the bushings - front and rear - rear left spring...

2 XJ questions and an identify this picture contest

Yes thanks for that advice. I've needed to hear that before. Turns out these are grills to a Nash Metropolitan. I might try to clean these up some and hang them on the wall. Any idea what I could do to get them looking a little better?
