    Vacuum Leak on Throttle Body

The hole that leaks (vacuum), is the port for the vacuum line for the MAP sensor. If your MAP isn't hooked up, in all likelihood, the motor runs very poorly and tends to run way rich, if at all, without stalling. One of those holes is blind and doesn't go completely through, the other that...

    ticking under load 360 wagoneer

Which valves were burnt? Front usually means a carburetor (fuel) problem, rears usually mean a vacuum leak, often at the manifold. Just exploring the possibility whatever caused the valves to fail, might still be there and maybe causing detonation, valve slap from loose guides or maybe...

    1992 2wd alignment problems

I usually start out by checking to see if the steering wheel is centered, when the vehicle is driving straight ahead. Then I measure, rim to rim front center (center of rim outer, top to bottom, as close as you can guesstimate) and compare it too the same measurement front rim to rim rear...

    '96 Cherokee Sport Stumbles

A sticky IAC can cause high or low idle that sometimes changes (pretty common). The fix can be as simple as squirting some spray oil into the IAC opening, then repeating a few times after the motor has run and sucked some idle air through the IAC. The temperature sender in the thermostat...

    95 grand cherokee won't start

Generally speaking, if a motor has fuel and air (in anywhere near the proper proportions) and spark, something is going to happen. If the starter turns the motor over, even if it doesn't run well, it will usually try to start, if it has fuel, air and spark. Try to figure out which is...

help opening hood on 98 cherokee

I always remove the bezel and headlight, then the headlight buckets, then unbolt the hood catch right and left. It may be a little different for your 98 with the newer style header/grill. But the latch and catch mechanism is likely the same or very similar.

    87 wagon problems... again

This link shows most of the sensors and there locations, the 87 doesn't hve the ballast resistor shown, it was first introduced in the 88 models, though some 87's were retrofitted. If you are getting spark it is doubtful to be the CPS, unless it is acting up intermittently. Jeep Cherokee...

    Need help!!

Just an oddball hunch, open the glovebox, touch the bulb quickly with your finger and see if it is hot. Be careful it may be real hot.

91 XJ with issues! Need help

Good catch Carnuck, I haven't seen that in so many years I'd completely forgotten about it and even then, never in an XJ. If your starter has been turning continuously, the over running clutch in the starter may be nearly toast. I don't know how much I'd trust it.

    87 wagon problems... again

I think in all likelihood it's something else, maybe something simple. I'd check out the most common causes before I tear the motor down. IMO it's doubtful to be either the timing chain or the cam. I've seen 4.0 run reasonably well with a timing chain so loose it contacted the inside of the...

    87 wagon problems... again

I'm trying to figure out how we got from an ignition lighting storm, to a timing chain, then a cam. It's late and the old brain may not be operating on all six cylinders. I'd back up a few steps and start over again. If you'd like I can try and talk you through the way I'd troubleshot it...

    Jeep filled with water!

Best guess would be the door isn't sealing properly. I've had my hinges wear and the door sag. I've also had the body tweak a little and had the door sag. Sometimes if you get just the right angle, while sitting in the drivers seat you can see light around the door seal. I occasionally use a...

    a few XJ 87 questions.

The instrument panel speakers are very near the front courtesy lamps. In the bottom (curved) portion of the dash. Make sure you get all the screws out of the rear hatch panel before you try to take it off and pry gently, if you force it, the tabs may snap off. Old plastic gets brittle anyway...

    noob questions

I was also thinking a possible head gasket leak. But before you skip any steps you really have to inspect for external leaks. Some good hiding spots are the top of the bottom radiator hose where it connects to the water pump, under the fan shroud in the upper right hand corner often (battery...

95 Grand Cherokee - Electrical Issue

I'm kind of Grand ignorant, I've only had XJ's. They are often similar. The battery tray temperature sensor sounds like a likely culprit. It imputs the regulator for the alternator, one function is to tone it down a bit, when it senses the battery is getting too hot (garbage in, garbage out)...

    a few XJ 87 questions.

Here is a partial 88 XJ schematic it may be helpful, it is likely close to or the same as the 87. I've found many wires present for various options (that were never installed), but sometimes you have to go back in the harness to the last connector to find them, sometimes not. It's likely the...

91 XJ with issues! Need help

I usually use a piece of plastic pipe and listen to various points on the motor to try and localize any knock. It may take awhile, but by repeating and sticking with it you can generally mark the spot fairly closely. Two possibilities that come to mind are the typical 4.0 piston slap, which...

97 cherokee with crank sensor problems

If the computer is saying the CPS, that's liklely it then. Like Bountyhunter said clean the connector first. The book says there is no definitive test for the CPS, except with scan tool. You can try checking between the grey/black wire and the Brown/yellow wire with an ohm meter with the...

97 cherokee with crank sensor problems

I've never seen that problem on the 91-97 model XJ's. Does the 97 still have the ignition coil? Can't remember if they did away with it in 97 or 98. Anyway, in the Renix XJ's it was pretty common for the CPS to heat up and stop working, never heard of that being an issue in later OBD 1 and OBD...

    1988 cherokee auto 4.0 RPM's wont drop.

I've had all the same idle problems you have described, multiple times. Various causes and fixes. You can plug off every vacuum line to the intake with a short piece of tubing with a screw in the end (except the brake booster) and drive it. The motor doesn't need any of them to run. If...
