Emergency brakes on these old rigs never would hold as well backwards as they would forward but should still hold. If your brakes are adjusted right the only other thing that it cold be is that the emergency brake cable is stretching. The adjustment for that is just behind the drivers side door...

It sounds like you may have a bad ground.

Part it out or sell it to some one that will. there's a lots parts there that they don't make any more or if they do their a bunch of crap. You may only get a little better than scrap price for it if it doesn't run. If you are in my area I may be interested.

90 minutes in what direction? I know that southern Maine has nothing as far as off road parks and would do very good.

The vacuum shifter on the front axle may be froze up. It happens and their cheap to replace. Also Some one may have mounted it backwards so that it would stay in 4wd all the time.

It might be just an adjustment on the switch on the passenger side of the transmission. It also controlls the neutral safety switch so be careful to get it adjusted right if you do the work yourself.

Are you looking for best price or best quality. I believe that Classic enterprises has about the best quality. I tried o put a link up but I didn't work.

It seems as thou the tub has been changed at one time. The gas fill describes a YJ tub. A common swap for old rusted out CJ tubs.

It does seem that it might be a cold start problem like 69jepcj said. According to your posts you have both fuel and spark. It might have started the fuel run back syndrome that a lot of old CJs get and just isn't getting enough gas. Try dumping some gas down the throat of the carb and try...

I would think that making some washers as you mentioned in your first post is the way to go. It might be hard to find some thick enough to do the job right. I think that 3/16 is a little over kill. 1/4 would be more than enough. But if 3/6 is all you've got, then go for it.
