    Help with part time 4WD

I very seldom move the 4WD selector lever. Today I did, because I needed it in neutral whilst working on the rear brakes. It did not move easily but now the light on the dash is lit up and I seem to be stuck in part time 4WD even with the lever back in 2WD. I have never really understood what...

    Speedo has gone erratic

Things have taken a turn for the worse. After my last post things went back to normal so all was good. The other day I pressed the trip reset button and it stuck partly reset. I pressed it a few more times but did not manage to get it to reset. What has happened now is the the main mileometer...

    Speedo has gone erratic

Thanks again for the suggestions. As the weekend is coming I'll get the screwdrivers out. If I need a replacement head has anyone got one they would part with (for a small fee)?

    Speedo has gone erratic

Thank you for the suggestions. I looked at gears on the net and there seem to be dozens to choose from. Why are there so many? I think I'll get underneath and see if it has a cable or a sender attached. I agree about clocking the clock but is just from my convenience and to keep it right on the...

    Speedo has gone erratic

On my 1994 XJ RHD my speedo has sometimes started jumping up to 80kmh irrespective of what speed I am doing. (It came with KM/H rather than MPH). Sometimes it is fine. If I continue to drive with it stuck at 80 it may suddenly start to give the right reading. The needle is steady and does not...

Cherokee 1994 XJ Front Axle question

Hello again, Since last time I have been through everything I can think of. There is no play in any ball joints or UJ. I have fitted two new front tyres because in Spain both tyres on each axle must be identical, mine were not. That would be a fail on the test. Smilar is not good enough. That...

Cherokee 1994 XJ Front Axle question

Hello again. This is not a reply but more of an extension to the original. But it is still a noise. This last week I have been getting a new noise from one of the diffs. I can't work out which one. It only happens when going left round corners like roundabouts (traffic circles I think you guys...

    4.0l XJ starting problem

I have just got one more thing to add. The 'O' ring I fitted came from a plumbers kit so I was not certain if the material was compatible with fuel. I have now replaced it with a Nitrile one and all seems OK, the pressure is still holding and starting is back to how it used to be. Just for...

    4.0l XJ starting problem

The sun came out today so I had a go at the problem and I have found the probable cause without even going underneath. I thought I would start under the bonnet (hood). I removed the return pipe from the regulator and checked the flow, which was good. When the pump stopped after a few seconds...

    4.0l XJ starting problem

Thanks for the link. It is a very good video and perfectly address my problem. The check valve he fitted is identical to the one I fitted. I don't fancy pulling the injectors until I have done his air pump checks at the tank. That will identify if I have got the check valve in the right line...

    4.0l XJ starting problem

Thanks for the help. Look forward to your suggestions. I did think about changing the pump but two things came to mind. First a new check valve to replace the 'dodgy' one in the tank is a very cheap fix (less than $2) and second, having looked at the tank I thought that by the time I got the old...

    4.0l XJ starting problem

Hello, When I do the key thing it starts quickly, every time after a short crank, even on a cold morning. Sometimes when I don't do the key trick it starts instantly, like it used to. It runs like a clock. Plugs are as they should be. Fuel consumption has not changed. Please bear in mind I...

    4.0l XJ starting problem

Hello again, It's been a long time since I started this and I have finally managed to put a check valve in the pipe just after the tank. I was hoping that would cure the dramatic loss in fuel pressure when I switch off. Unfortunately nothing has changed, so it wasn't the pump check valve after...

1994 XJ steering knuckle ball joints

Thanks for the advice eveyone. I think I will do a combination of both as well as pumping in more grease before I fit it. Re the plug suggestion. For later on I'll see if you can position the U/J so you can remove to plug and fit the nipple and then put it back. I had not noted the plug in the...

1994 XJ steering knuckle ball joints

Thanks for the advice so far. Having had a closer look at what is on the car it seems that I have one greasable ball joint and one that can't be regreased. I have attached a pic of the knuckle and also a pic of what Crown are offering as a replacement which clearly shows two nipples in the pack...

Yes, it's parts #20. I'll get some shots of the real thing to show the problem.

1994 XJ steering knuckle ball joints

Sooner or later due the lousy Spanish roads round here I am going to have to replace the ball joints on the steering knuckle. Getting the parts and fitting them does not seem too bad a job, but I have a question about lubrication. The top joint has a grease nipple which is easy to get at, but...

    4.0l XJ starting problem

Thanks for the latest info. I have done a pressure check today and your diagnosis is spot on Thanks. On turning the key to run I got 30 psi and on the second go got 37 psi. When I turned the key off it lost ALL pressure in about 3 or 4 seconds. Running at low idle it settled at 38 psi and 44 psi...

    4.0l XJ starting problem

If push comes to shove and I need to replace an injector I think I should go the the 4 hole type. Can you advise which is a good replacement? Can you include Maker, part number etc? I have worked on many diesel injectors but never before on petrol (sorry gas) ones.
