RE: Trxus Tires for Sale+more

Hey,

My exhaust stinks, smells like its running rich, its colorless.

I know webers (mine is the small weber) run rich, but maybe Im not burning all the fuel in there..the old plugs were jet black with soot.

The distributor was new 2 years ago.
I have the ford duraspark upgrade. Plugs were new in November.

How can I eliminate the "Not burning all the fuel" variable?

Hi,

Sounds like either your fuel delivery system is dumping too much fuel in there to begin with, or your ignition system is not working properly, or all of the above. Things like incorrect spark plug gap, old- high resistance spark plug wires, and/or a weak ignition coil could cause the spark to be too weak. Timing issues can also cause a weak spark due to things like arcing in the distributor. But if you smell a lot of gas, then I'd bet the problem lies in the fuel delivery system.

need a little help

You could lean out the carb. Consider an MSD ignition to provide multiple hot sparks to better burn the fuel.

RE: Ignition Box

I'd agree that you should be able to lean it out enough. You need to get it fixed, it's robbing you of mileage and power.
I'd probably be more inclined to use it as an excuse to step up the ignition a little bit though.

No gas on start up

Ill re-adjust the richness & idle tomorrow. As well as the timing. So the ford duraspark upgrade (from this website) isnt really an "upgrade"?

Heres a little background info:

Until around November 04, I got 280 miles/tank (20 gal). Then all of a sudden I started getting around 210/tank. It was like day and night. I replaced the air filter, got new spark plugs (gapped at .040)... Still no luck. i asked a local performance shop and they said "winter gas"??
I just replaced the entire exhaust sytem 2 weeks ago, pacesetter header, high flow cat, and TFX cat-back. I should be restriction free for sure now.
There is no emission controls at all on the motor, except PCV and carb vent and charcoal canister. Pulse air system is gone, all the vacuum valves, sensors etc. are capped, computer is bypassed as well. It is a wireless, tubeless, airline-less engine compartment.

I think 'winter gas' is a bunch of crap, last year that same weber got me
280/tank...

Anyone?

I put split fire plugs in my tj and noticed a jump in power and fuel economy. I learned to drive in a 1978 cherokee chief and had a lot of problems with backfiring, my dad was a mechanic and replaced the coil and plug wires. regapped the plugs. the problem went away. I also had a 1985 cj-7 which always smelt like gas rebuilt the carb and it went away. I dont know if this will help but you can try.
