CARB Problems

Hello, I have a 89 inline 6 manual carb YJ.

What kind of problems have you guys ever had with your stock carbs?

I believe my carb is going / not rebuilt the right way. Is it easy to rebuild a carb? What does it mean to have a "nutter" or something like that done on the carb? Is it a lot better afterwards?

I ask these questions because I believe that when ever I hit a bump, something in my carb is doing something weird because it kinda sputters after each bump.

Thanks a lot, Jon Tice.

Get rid of that carter carb and get a motorcraft or weber. I did and I have no problems now and more power. I got the weber It illiminated the computer and smog crap that is robbing you of power.

The Nutter takes away all the computer junk on the carb. It's supposed to help a lot. If you get a manual for rebuilding a carb, it's really easy. I even think it's fun! The bump thing you mentioned is probably a float issue. Here's a link that may help- Easy Fix for Jeep 258 Carter BBD Idle Problem . I have a Motorcraft 2100 carb which is supposed to be really nice, but I think I've got a lemon carb.

carbs are OK.. if you want something that is fairly fool proof and will be extremely reliable for both offroad and Daily driven, EFI!

taking it to the shop

I'm going to be taking my Jeep to the shop on Wednesday, so I will let you know how it all goes. Jon.

I rebuilt my first Carter, on a 1984 CJ7 258, in 1998. I did all the tricks to bypass the stepper motor and smog stuff. Shortly afterwards, because it never worked right, I purchased my first Weber (K551-38). I will NEVER re-build a Carter again. The 300 CFM Weber (Model K551) actually increases gas mileage and power! The 400 CFM Weber (Model K551-38) gives a seat of the pants increase in power I just couldn't believe. Kits are readily available for the 4.2 liter at about $380 and $480 respectively. The kits include EVERTHING you need to make the change. You won't regret it. As a side note, the '84 actually passed emissions better with the Weber than with all the smog stuff working "properly". I'll post a link in the "Vendors" section to our Weber page...

i had the same junk on mine and went with the nutter bypass, and then off to the junk yard to get a 15 dollar motorcraft .( i paid $50.00 for a pc of junk on the internet ist.DUH) i next did the TFI upgrade from this site. the jeep is like brand new...not kidding. dont waste the big bucks just put the right stuff in place to get rid of your headaches !

I did the TBI. Costly ($800.00) but I tell you, I removed 2 boxes of crap from my motor and it runs awesome. Well worth the money and having to deal with emission tests, it's worth it. Nice to work on the motor without a cluster of vacuum lines.

6 hours later to my Jeep.

Of course, you could throw a 2000 hp MTU diesel in it and not worry about a carb lol. might have to beef your front end up a little.:D

Finished it with cold induction. Not trying to be a butt head but this is what I finally did because I was tired of fighting the carter and all the crap that was with my CJ. It ran great for years but when the problems came, they came with hell. Emissions in Colorado made it pretty much impossible to pass with the system I had. This might not be the fix for you, but I thought I would throw it out for some that have this problem. Good luck.

It depends on where you live. In Virginia, we have inspections, and if you go by the book, you aren't allowed to swap stuff like that (no holley carb, or fuel injection) - you should fail visual inspection. That doesn't make much sense, since you should be cleaner... but I digress.

I ran the carter for years, and it worked fine after I learned how to clean it out. You need to take the venturi out (little tubes down the throat of the carb) and blast them with carb cleaner - if they are really clogged, run some guitar string through them. I was nervous the first time, but if you take your time it's really easy, and can be done with the carb on the Jeep. The idea is to get it really clean through the little passages, so that gas can flow through.

Take some photos of the opening of your carb, and I'll point them out to you.

Also, if you haven't done the Jeep TFI upgrade then you really should. Best thing I ever did for my CJ7
