89 jeep wrangler fuel problem

I have a 89 jeep wrangler 258 6 cylinder with a fuel delivery problem. I replaced the fuel pump, fuel filter, and lines. It seems that the bypass on the fuel filter creats a vacumm and stops gas from going to the carb. If i pore gas into the card it starts and runs till that gas is used. Any thoughts or ideas would get ths 89 back on the road. Thanks Mike:(
 

I would say that there's a restriction in the fuel line by the symptoms you have described. Check the fuel lines and vapor lines for kinks or pinch. Make sure that the fuel to the carb. is flowing properly. If so, and it is a carburated engine, check the needle in the float bowl, it could be stuck and is keeping the fuel from flowing thru thus, the fuel re-routes back through the return line.
 
I will try your advice. I did once before disconnect the return off the fuel filter to a container abd it would start briefly. I did find my rubber fuel line hoses are shoot and am replacing them now. Again thanks for advice and I will let you know.

Mike, did you get your problem fixed, I also have a 89 Wrangler, 258 with a weber carb. fuel gets down to 1/2 tank and it dies like it,s out of fuel. pour a couple of gallons in the tank aand it willtart right up???
 

You have a hole in the pick up in the tank

If your problem is in conjunction with the use of a Weber carb, I would recommend removing the fuel return line and reduce the fuel pressure to 4-6 psi. Weber carbs where not designed for re-circulating fuel lines. Yes it can be done with a return line with some exceptions, but generally the end result will be never achieving the performance or smooth operation that a Weber can provide.

And in Buckshots' case, likely a hole as SuperJ mentioned..........
 
Already replace pickup in tank, checked suction at fuel pump, could not get a reading. Threw a new pump and filter on, getting down close to 1/2 tank again, we'll see what happens. Has anyone used the weber carb from Weber direct? Read some bad things, the jeep runs o.k. but poor feul mileage and tail pipe is really black. Anyone rejetted one? I'm not a carb guy.

Yes, I have had several Webers over the years on various vehicles. I currently have a 32/36 on a 258. I average around 16 mpg., but the performance trade off is worth it. Re-jetting can be time consuming finding the right combo for your vehicle.

Black exhaust usually indicates "rich". But pulling your plugs will tell the true story. I have found that a HEI or at least a output coil has great benefits. I have all sorts of info, links, etc. if your interested.
 
PM161, already installed the Chevy HEI, all the emission garbage has been removed, new exhaust no cat. new float / pickup in the tank, new fuel pump and filter. It did the same thing yesterday sitting in the driveway, died no fuel to the pump. blew back through the fuel line to the tank and the pressure pushed gas back through the line.Jeep started right up, gauge said 1/2 tank, went to station and filled it up, took ten gal. so the dash gauge is right. I'm running the 32/36 Webber no press. reg. and the vapor cannister is not hooked to the engine but the line from the tank is still hooked to the cannister. I still have the return line to the tank hooked up, I've read conflicting ideas on eliminating the return. ??? Any ideas anyone???
