    '95 transmission help *urgent*

An AX 15 would probably be your best bet. If you could get the donor Jeep bell housing, transmission, and transfer case together it would be the easiest way out and if lucky even the cheapest. Check this out: http://www.jeeptech.com/convtrans/ax15swap.html

    YJ fuel problem

I agree with checking the fuel pressure as it could be the fuel pump. No harm done with changing the fuel filter but filters tend to make a motor sputter under load but don’t tend to make the motor die unless totally clogged and I think would have been noticeable prior to getting that bad.

    drivetrain for a 79 CJ5

I miss typed the year of my Commando Dana 44 axle, it is a 1972, not 1971. The 72 & 73 Commandos had a Dana 20 so the pumpkins are centered; they bolt right in and even have 30 spline shafts. An AMC 20 rear end with one piece shafts will hold up under mild use, even with the 304. I ran one with...

    Weber carb

Look, a lot of guys swear by the Weber swap BUT if you don’t get a good one out of the box you will be left with not much more than a door stop. This comes from the been-there-done-that file. On the box it says “no warranty what so ever” and from my experience they mean it. Go with the...

    drivetrain for a 79 CJ5

Rubiconrich has it right, jeeps & swaps go together. To me half the fun is the search for the parts, which can literally take years. In my case, the 1978 CJ5 lost its AMC 304 for a 1978 AMC 401 from a Waggy, the T150 was bumped for a 1977 CJ T18, a 1980 Scout Dana 300 replaced the Dana 20, and...

    drivetrain for a 79 CJ5

Actually you could get a CJ with a T18 starting in 1972 through 1979 but again only behind the I6 except for 1979. From 1972 to sometime during the 1976 model year the 1st gear was the 4.02 (close ratio) 1st gear. Sometime in 1976 the ratio was changed to 6.32 (wide ratio) but I’m not sure...

    drivetrain for a 79 CJ5

To save everyone from having to study the entire Jeep history above, the stock CJ5 in 1979 came out of the box with the AMC I6, T150, Spicer-Dana 20, Dana 30 front, and the AMC 20 rear. The AMC 304 was the V8 engine option and the T18 was a transmission option. 1979 was the only year Jeep...

    engine swap

The Rambler/AMC 327 is not the same engine as the ever popular GM/ Chevy 327; I believe it is a lot heavier than the Chevy plus in the early days AMC didn’t standardize bell housing bolt patterns so that could be an issue. As an older odd ball I would expect rebuild parts for the 327 would be...

    Ford 302 to a T-176

The T176 is a Ford designed transmission and uses the standard Ford bolt pattern. I don’t know about the different shaft lengths that may or may not have been available.

    Plastic CJ5 gas tank

I know that the 1972 & up CJs do not have an outlet on the bottom of the tank; not sure about the older tank under the front seat versions, however if your CJ is 1972 or newer the gas lines (main fuel line, return, and vent) attach to the top of the tank.

    cj5

It’s all about condition, tires, top, and how many other “goodies” are on it for your local area. Generally a 73 CJ5 should go for $2500 to $4500, sometimes less, sometime more.

    78 cj 5 hard top

To clarify, I bought a 1981 CJ5 that had a “Jeep” brand metal hard top. It is my understanding that Jeep made them but they were not offered except as a dealer added option.

    Swapping a 4cyl into a CJ-7

Been thinking of the gas issue too as we all have. When gas was cheap the only worry about mileage was how much extra gas did you have to carry to wheel away the day and still get back to the first filling station on the road home to buy more. An I4 in a CJ is nothing new of course and I...

    Need help

I said transmission not the transfer case, sorry I miss typed, but I’m thinking the problem could be one of a two things. First the linkage may be binding as you changed it while the case was out. I would go back through the install and make sure all looks good. Second, gears inside the...

    Need help

Did you do work to the transmission during the jeep rebuild or just put it back in as it originally came out? Did the transmission function properly prior to the jeep rebuild?

    CJ trans

Here are a few facts about the T18 and CJs: The CJ T18 was offered from 1972 to 1979 as a factory option and only behind the AMC I6 except for 1979 when it was available behind both the I6 and the V8. The CJ T18 starting in 1972 was the 4.02 low version. Sometime during the 1976 model year the...

    Whats the difference?

To me a misfire would be the absence of a fire, as in nothing happens when it should. A back fire is fire when there shouldn’t be as in out of time. So, when you have a backfire through the carburetor for example the ignition timing is such that the plug fires out of time while the intake...

    T-90 3speed

Assuming everything is stock you have a Spicer 18 transfer case with the PTO port. To get more speed all you need an overdrive. Warn made the original version then they sold the tooling to Advanced Adaptors. AA sells the overdrive under the Saturn name. You might get lucky and score a used one...
