Leaf spring bushing went in just a little too easy

Been spending the past couple days cutting out and pressing in my first bushings and so far, well mostly good. Got the leaf springs off the 96 XJ and finally got all the bushings out. Pressed the smaller rear bushings in first and both went in using a 2 ft breaker bar and a ball joint...

    Taking out leaf spring shackles

SLOWLY is how it's coming. Although I did figure out how to get the shackles out by doing though. I've got a hitch installed which means the shackle to spring bolts (which were installed from the inside direction) won't slide all the way out after the nut is removed. So for leverage sake I'm...

    Taking out leaf spring shackles

Stock '96 XJ here and I'm in the middle of cranking out my leaf spring shackle bolts, for the first time, in 21 years. Intentions are to replace all 4 spring bushings and both shackles. So when I'm getting the rear of the leaf springs loose should I take out the upper shackle bolt first...

Fuel injector upgrade for the 4.0, and how to?

Thanks for the info. First I'm hearing about these unwanted side effects, although that sounds like a wise caution. What would be some of the anticipated problems?

    Unknown whump in the XJ

Ok for sure I'll start checking on all those things. My thinking on the drive shafts is that since they turn at a different rate of the thumps it probably isn't them, but I honestly don't know. Although regardless i'll still check the driveshaft with a string like you suggest. How would I go...

    Unknown whump in the XJ

Stock 96 XJ here and the old girl's had this problem ever since I bought her 11 years ago. There's a whump sound that matches exactly the rate of tire rotation and I have no idea what's causing it. Here's the facts ma'am... - It's been happening since before I got this recent set of tires...

Body fab or Finally got the bug

I'm in a 96 XJ. For the 11 years I've owned her I've always sprayed the underside down better than the top side after road salt applications so I guess this got started sometime within the first 10 yrs. The truck was in the mtns of E KY for that time, and I doubt much was done about keeping...

Fuel injector upgrade for the 4.0, and how to?

What's this I've been reading on the fuel injector upgrade for the 4.0? I've had my 96 XJ since 2006 and had the same injectors all that time. It's always had a little misfire even after a tuneup so I figure I might as well try this upgrade, especially since I saw one report of it only costing...

Body fab or Finally got the bug

Yeah I won't be surprised if a lot of that rocker panel has to come out.

Body fab or Finally got the bug

After all this time I finally just figured out what kind of lift setup I want. It's a little depressing knowing that for now on a little part of me will be miserable until it all gets done. It's still gonna be a while thought because I prob won't be getting a second vehicle anytime soon and...

Got some dim side and back lights on the XJ

All the exterior lights on the XJ have gone dim over the years and I'm wondering if there's anything I can do to get them brighter short of upgrading to a newer type bulb. Everythings running fine electrically, but just the exterior bulbs seem dim themselves, and since the lenses and...

    Swapping out U bolts

With the 400 in parts and another 300 in tool/odds and ends I'm gearing up with to do this job another 30 ain't a whole lot. New U bolts are going in. Cheap peace of mind.

Where to get rear spring shackles just 1-2" higher

Yep thanks. Would that b b/c of the stationary pivot point which would be at the front suspension? Actually the lift I'm trying to achieve is b/t the top of the rear tire and bottom of the wheel well. Since I'm measuring what about 3/4 the way back from the front pivot point I'm guessing the...

    Swapping out U bolts

Hmm interesting, I'm getting suggestions for both resuing and replacing. One guy was saying to replace them unless I already had high quality aftermarket bolts in there. Do they have a tendency to break or something when they're old. I'm in a '96 so mine are 21 yrs. I'm always just on the road.

Good to know superj. I figured they'd be more of a specialty piece.

Rubber v. poly sway bar link bushing

Yeah that's my question too...whats the advantages of poly. I've heard they give a stiffer ride, but for bushings that effect steering maybe that'd be what you'd want. Would greasing once a year keep the poly quiet?

Where to get rear spring shackles just 1-2" higher

    Swapping out U bolts

I'm almost embarrassed to make this a thread, but I guess the only stupid question... With the S&!^ storm of information I've been absorbing lately I believe I was told that if I take the U-bolts off to do my leaf spring bushing swap out that I should put new ones back in. Is this true or...

Where to get rear spring shackles just 1-2" higher

Ok talk me out of this if I'm being stupid. But I'm wanting to update my bushings on the cheap for better steering and ride. In the rear I'm avoiding getting full leaf springs b/c of the cost, so I'm just gonna press some new ones in. Nother reason i'm avoiding new leafs is hopefully not...

Rubber v. poly sway bar link bushing

Yeah I know this is a nit picky question, but doing some suspension spruce ups on the old 96 XJ and I'm in the middle of looking at front sway bar links. The Moog has what looks like blue poly bushings, whereas the OMIX ADA has rubber bushings. Problem is I've been trying to go all rubber...
