TJ windshield glass

Hi All,

My defroster has just broken my SECOND windshield glass. The original one cracked a couple of years ago when I left the Jeep running to warm up (with the defroster on) . This one cracked while driving. I put on the defroster and within a couple of minutes I had a crack starting at the bottom - same place - just like the first one. Someone at work said, "MAN!! how hot is your defroster?" - It's good and hot but it's not THAT hot. So here's my question (which I may have asked a few years ago- can't remember) ... Are the TJ windshield glasses flat? This one (a replacement) is "bubbled" at the ends - like, slightly curved. I thought the original was flat. If you stand at the side of the Jeep and look across the glass you can see that it is very far from flat. So, I'm thinking of getting an OEM glass if available. Or, getting one cut like I've done for my Military trucks and Jeeps. I can't see getting an other bubbly glass put in by the glass shop. Thanks everyone - John

It's has a slight convex or concave however way you want to look at it. I don't see a reason why a flat glass would be an issue for a replacement. I have a TJ factory glass in my garage with a factory tint. I just dont know if it has the defroster grid on it if your interested.

What brand was the replacement glass? Is your windshield frame bent in any plane, putting the glass under stress.

The frame looks OK but I have thought that maybe the ledge is bent since this is the second glass. When the glass is out I'm going to straight-edge the ledge. There is a good 3/8 inch gap between the glass and the metal, visible since I have no rubber trim on it. Right now it's very cold here so I'm going to wait for the replacement.

I'm not sure who made the replacement. It was installed by one of those mobile shops.

Thank You - John

Look at the corners of the glass there should be a brand name or logo etched in the glass.

never had an issue with the windsheild cracking from defoster running too long might of had a chip under the rubber from the install.we get -30 degree weather a lot jeep runs sometimes for 2 hours with defroster on high no cracks 195 degree thermostat in engine

John, I just had my windshield replaced, it had a slight curve to it and the replacement is the same. If they both cracked in the same place, I would bet that the windshield frame has a bulge at the pinch weld or something.

It's not DOT approved for street use because emergency personnel cannot smash through it and must cut it if necessary for a vehicle extraction in an accident. I'm not real concerned about this in a TJ.
