little tune ups?

What are some little tune type things can I do to give my engine a little more power and keep running good longer? I have tools to do just about anything myself.

You never get any really appreciable power gains from most items. Really maintenance and avoiding loss from ware and tear is best.

Correct plugs and gaps
Clean TB and IAC
Proper fluids and levels
Clean your battery and ground connections.
Run engine above 3300 rpm every 10k mi or 6 mo whatever is shorter.
Proper tire pressure
Correct gearing to tire size ratio.



If you want more power, look into a stroker, turbo or super charger, or a 8 cyl swap.
 
I had never been instructed to run over 3300 rpm's before now. What is the benefit to the engine? If you do interstate driving, is it still necessary?

i installed a cold air intake. better throttle response....runs a bit cooler....about 1/2 MPG. You do hear the suction from inside the cab...but I haven't found it to be an issue. Install requires a few drivers and a drill with a 3" hole saw....takes about 1.5 hrs.

This one is made by Spectra.

Other things....MSD coil....8mm wires...iridium plugs....

Things to come....new intake...new header....over sized tail pipe....new injectors.....
 
One thing I had done was install 4 hole fuel injectors. Stock injectors are only single hole. When the upgrade was complete I did notice better fuel mileage and throttle response.
 
FYI I spent over 2k in engine upgrades (see sig) and there wasn't any notable power improvement. On trips my mpg increased and was very speed dependent.

65 and under I'd better mpg.

On the 3300 rpm it is in the tsb for jeep. When you run mainly city there is potential for carbon to buildup on the exhaust and intake valves near the exhaust.
If the buildup is small you could loosen it and rotate the valves by running the engine over 3300 rpm. The engine isn't necessarily designed this way and I'm not exactly sure how it occurs. My guess is when above 3300 rpm the spring rebound speed isn't fast enough to hold the valve and it is allowed to rotate.
If carbon buildup is bad enough the valve will not rotate.
