Bright idea

I just got a 98 TJ, 6 cyl pretty much all stock. I'm thinking of putting a set of 30 X 10.5 AT tires on the stock steel 15X7 rims. I plan on blasting the rims and painting them either black or to match the "red". What I'm looking for is some chrome or stainless trim rings that will work on the shallow offset on those rims and not infringe upon the D holes. Any ideas on any of this plan or alternatives will be appreciated.

Jeep offered those wheel with a factory chrome cover, not a tirim ring. Personally, the black and red would both look stupid, just my opinion. I would leave them the same color, or if they need attention, then repain the same color. I think a nice machine gray or gunmetal gray would look awsome with those gray stripes.

as for tires, swap on some 31" tires, pretty much the same price, will fill in the wheel wells a little better. If your going with BFG AT's, go with the 32" tires, they will fit just right, might havea very slight rub on the LCA at full lock, but wouldn't worry about it.

I don't think the red/red would look right, I think the current silver or a darker gray would work. You can easily run 31" tires, then down the road consider a budget boost (coil spacer lift), cheap and easy to install.

Thanks for your honest input. From what I've found in my forum research, you guys know your stuff and I respect and appreciate your opinions. This is my third Jeep, and I want go give it some added "personality". Much of the fun of the Jeep experience is the exchange of ideas, and adventures that forums such as this provide. I've learned a lot from this research.

IMHO, you need to ditch those rims. My '03 came with the same rims. If you ever get into any mud (which I'm quite sure you will), you'll discover why. Those things hold mud BAD!!!! First time I got stuck, I couldn't go over 35 on the way home.............mud stuck in the rims!!!!!

Those rims suck and there's tons more available for a reasonable price.

Yeah, mud, I can see where they might do that on the backside. Thanks for the input. OK here's another scenario. I'm selling my 89 YJ with the stock 15 x 7 aluminum rims. I could put my TJ tires on those rims and swap 'em, since the YJ tires are even lamer. The aluminum wheels are kind of tarnished and slightly pitted. I'm sure they're a better quality wheel, but would need some refurbishing, if that's even doable. I'll have to do some explaining, since the ad mentions those wheels. It appears that I should just run the set up I have until the current puny tires wear out and go the whole route. That will give me time to reappropriate my beer fund to the wheel/tire fund. Like that will happen. I'll figure something out.

While checking on tires, the salesman told me of a guy with 4 polished aluminum wheels. I'll check them out and a bunch of other stuff he's got stashed in his garage. It looks like I'll be doing my part to keep the economy going.
